Week of February 27th

Hi Everyone,

I hope that everyone had a wonderful relaxing weekend.

I would like to thank Mrs. Guss (Riley) for coming in on Friday teaching us about the art of Henri Matisse. The students created some wonderful pieces of art. Please see our Shutterfly page for their pictures.

I would also like to thank Mrs. Drexler (Maxim) for volunteering to provide snacks and drinks for after the writing test. Don't forget that we will take the test on Tuesday 2/28. We will begin passing out materials at 8:50 so that we can start as close to 9:00 as possible. Please make sure that your child gets plenty of rest on Monday night and eats a good filling breakfast on Tuesday morning. Remind them that there is nothing to feel nervous about they have written many essays for Mrs. Pavlinek.

This week in math we will begin our geometry unit. We will learn about points, lines, line segments, rays, angles, and triangles. Students will also learn how to measure the size of angles and draw angles to a specified number of degrees using a protractor. Students will learn how to use both half circle and full circle protractors. If you don't have one you may want to purchase one so that your child can have one to use for completing homework.

This week in science we will continue to work with our bean plants. So far we are not having very much success. I think we may have gotten a bad batch of seeds. We will also learn about the life cycles of Florida animals. Students will learn about complete and incomplete metamorphosis. We will also take a field trip to our school gardens to hunt for the two types of angiosperms-monocots and dicots. We will complete this chapter this week. Look for us to take our test next week on Friday.

This week in social studies we will discuss Florida becoming the 27th state in 1845. We will also discuss the right to vote. We will discuss the 15th Amendment giving the right to vote to all men, the 19th Amendment giving the right to vote to all women, and the 26th Amendment which lowered the voting age from 21 to 18. We will also complete this chapter, look for our test to be next week on either Monday or Tuesday.

Have a GREAT week,

Aesha

Week of February 20th

Hi Everyone,

I hope that everyone enjoyed their three day weekend! I know I did!! After two weeks of a crazy hectic schedules I am also looking forward to a semi normal week.

It is early release on Wednesday (tomorrow) so plan on 1:30 dismissal.  If your family collected pledges for Boosterthon, all money is due this Friday.

On next Tuesday we will be taking the Florida Standards Assessment for writing. Students will get 120 minutes to complete their essays. Mrs. Pavlinek and I are requesting a healthy snack and juice boxes for after the test is completed. If you would like to volunteer for one of the two please let your child's homeroom teacher know no later than Monday 2/27.

This week in math we will complete our study of decimals. The test for this unit will consist of two Standards Mastery tests on the computer and a paper pencil portion. Please see the chart below for the testing schedule.

Our next unit of study will be geometry and measurement.

This week in science we will begin learning about the life cycles of Florida plants. We will learn the difference between angiosperms (A plant that has flowers and makes seeds in a fruit, pod, or shell.) and gymnosperms (A plant that produces seeds in cones.). From that study we will then learn about the life cycles of Florida animals?

In social studies we will continue to learn how to discuss information rather than just repeat facts from our reading. When we discuss we take the information that  was read and begin to answer the hows and whys behind that information. We pursue the cause and effect relationship behind the information. Discussion includes making inferences based on the information that was read.
An example of this from this week's reading: Students can show that they read the material by knowing what the benefits were to Florida becoming a territory. I am ready to discuss when I can explain how those benefits would be useful to someone that lived in Florida during this time period. To help your child read the lesson with them or have them read it to you and then talk about the material.

Have a GREAT Week,
Aesha

Week of February 13th

Hi Everyone,

Congratulations to our Invention Convention participants. Several of our students entered projects into this year's contest. Rushil and Aryav won 1st place in the group projects. Saachi and Anaiya placed 3rd in the group projects.

Congratulations also go out to our classmates that participated in the testing for Math Super Stars, Vivian, Aryav, Sidd, and Viraat.

Don't forget to go on to FunRun.com and get those pledges in!! We will have our Fun Run this Thursday at 11:15. Parents are invited to come and cheer us on!! We received our shirts today at school and I will hold them until Thursday morning. My homeroom students may come into the room when they arrive to school on Thursday morning to change into their shirts.

We will exchange our Valentines cards on Tuesday afternoon. A letter came home last week with all of our classmates names.

This week in math we will learn how to add decimals. Students will be shown two strategies. One where they convert the decimals to fractions and then add. Then converting the fraction back to a decimal.  The second will be taking the decimals and lining them up in an algorithm and then adding, making sure to bring the decimal down into the answer. Once learning both strategies students will be free to choose the one that they like the most when completing their math work.
We will also learn how money is related to decimals and fractions. Students will also practice giving change back. Which will lead us into subtracting decimals. Students will be able to use the strategies mentioned above for subtraction. We will complete our decimal unit next week. We will then move on to geometry and measurement. If your child does not have a protractor, you may want to purchase them one for our upcoming work.

In science this week we will finish up our discussion of animal instincts and learned behaviors. We will begin learning the life cycle of flowering plants. Our study will include flowering plants (angiosperms) and nonflowering plants (gymnosperms).

For this week's social studies we learn about the tensions in our state that led to the First Seminole War. We will also learn about Andrew Jackson and how he went from a commander in the Army, to Governor of Florida, to the seventh President of the United States.

Don't forget that President's Day is Monday so we have a long weekend!!

     Have a great week!!

Week of February 6th

Happy Monday Everyone,

We have a very busy week coming up this week. This week begins our annual Booster-Thon fundraiser. On Tuesday students will participate in the opening pep rally. After the pep rally students will be bringing home their packets. An added benefit of this year's fundraising is that once our class reaches $30 per lab the Booster-Thon company will donate money locally in Duval County to give food to needy DCPS students. Our Fun Run will be next Thursday. Students will be receiving their Fun Run shirts soon. Please let us know what size shirt you would like for your child. Shirts come in sizes children's small, medium, and large. There will also be some adult small, medium and large. If you are able to participate in this fundraiser, I encourage you to do so. It will be greatly appreciated.

On Wednesday, we will have another early release day. Wednesday is also a Spirit Night at Chick-Fil-A at Beaches and Hodges. A portion of the money comes back to JBE. So if you are looking for a quick dinner Chick-Fil-A has got you covered.

On Wednesday afternoon we will have a science assembly. This will help get us ready for Thursday's JBE Family Science Night. Science night begins at 6:00. From 6-7:30 students will be able to participate in some fun hands on science activities. At 7:30 families are invited to participate in a fun science show. If students come out for science night, they will earn a homework pass!

On next Tuesday (2/14) afternoon we will celebrate Valentine's Day. Students will be bringing home a letter describing what that will entail. As part of our card exchange students are invited to make a valentine's box to hold the cards and treats that they receive from their classmates.

In math this week, we will learn how to represent decimals on area models and number lines. Students will also learn how to compare and order decimals. By the end of the week students will begin learning how to add decimals.

For science this week, we will continue to learn about plants and animals. We will learn about the differences between animal instincts and learned animal behaviors. the animal instincts that we will focus on are hibernation and migration. Did you know that the longest animal migration is 44,000 miles a year? What animal makes this long journey? Ask your child at the end of the week.

In social studies we will begin working on Chapter 5. In chapter 5 we will learn more about slavery. Students will also learn about life in Florida after the American Revolution. The population of Florida post war was mostly made up of British Loyalist that didn't think the new American Government would succeed. Then they could go back to their homes in the Thirteen Colonies.

Have a Wonderful week,
Aesha
