Week of 2/28/2022

Happy Monday Everyone,

I would like to thank everyone that has registered their child for the Starfish Sprint and given donations to our school. All donations need to be made by the end of the week for your child to earn prizes. We will have our run on this Friday. PTO is asking for students to wear their class shirts for the run.

PMA Testing
We will begin PMA 3 Testing on this Wednesday. We will give this PMA under simulated FSA testing protocols. Students will take all of the tests in their homeroom class beginning first thing in the morning. Students will be asked to leave their backpacks and lunchboxes in the hall and only bring in their #2 pencils.
Please make sure your child gets a good nights sleep and eats a filling breakfast. Students will not be allowed to have snacks until testing concludes.
This PMA will be longer than the first two tests we took this school year. For both reading and math the tests will include all of the fourth grade standards.
We have picture day this Wednesday. All students will be included in our class picture, but only the students that send in an order will take a spring picture. The order form was sent home last week.

On next Thursday we will be going to MOSH. Be on the lookout for the permission slip to come home. We are able to have unlimited chaperones so if you want to go just let me know. We will once again be using the digital payment platform that we used for our St. Augustine trip https://DCPS.schoolcashonline.com.
Also coming home this week is a tentative lunch order for our field trip to the Jacksonville in April. We will be purchasing our lunches through the zoo and they would like to have a tentative count from us as soon as possible. This way they can get a jump on ordering the food. This is due to the difficulties with supply chains. The zoo field trip is on Friday April 22nd. If you think you might be able to join us please let us know what you would like for lunch too. Please do not send any money with the Zoo Lunch Form, this is just for us to get a count.

The only ones that we have left are 3 decimal standards and customary measurement. As a way to introduce these standards I am assigning optional work on Freckle for these standards. This will be a way to introduce these topics so that students will be somewhat aware of these types of questions when they see them on the PMA. These standards will be covered in class in plenty of time for the FSA in May.
We have almost reached the end of our fractions unit. Our end of unit test will be on Tuesday March 8th.

This week in science we will cover natural resources. We will study renewable and nonrenewable resources. We will also study resources that can be found in Florida. This is the last portion of this unit. Our test on unit 4 will be on Wednesday March 9th.

Happy President's Day Everyone,

We will be celebrating Two's Day on tomorrow, 2-22-22!! Students are invited to dress alike with a twin, or wear ties, tutu's, and tennis shoes to celebrate the day.
The Starfish Sprint "Fun"draiser will kick off on this Wednesday with a pep rally. Please see the schedule of events below.
Please consider participating in this years fundraiser. Our PTO provides many benefits for our students and classrooms. In recent years the money raised has been used to provide much needed technology equipment for our school and classrooms and also playground equipment and materials for students to use during their recess time. PTO has also set up our out door classrooms that we have been able to extend our learning outside.

This week in math, we will continue working on fractions. This week we will work on subtracting fractions from whole numbers and mixed numbers, multiplying fractions, and comparing fractions. This is review of previously worked on material. This time the numbers will increase in size.
We will have another timed facts paper pencil activity on Friday. This will include both multiplication and division facts.

This week in science we will begin learning about the classification of rocks. Rocks are classified into three groups; igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks. and metamorphic rocks. Rocks are classified based on how they are created.
Igneous Rocks-Rocks that are created when lava (above ground molten rock) and magma (below ground molten rock) cools to form rock. You can tell the difference between the types based on the size of the mineral crystals. Lava formed igneous rock have small to no crystals because they cool quickly. Magma formed rocks have very large crystals because they cool very slowly.
Sedimentary Rocks-Rocks that are created when the sediment of previously weathered rock is pressed together. Sedimentary rock can usually be identified by the different colored layers in the rock.
Metamorphic Rocks-Rocks that form when Earth's processes change the mineral grain of other rocks. Metamorphic rock can form as a result of high heat, high pressure, or a combination of both.

Due to the length of our fractions unit students will take a test on fractions on this Friday. This will allow us to have at lest two test grades in the grade book for the quarter. The test will cover only the material that we have covered so far in the unit.
As mentioned in last week's newsletter students will be given an FSA Review Packet. A few pages will be assigned each week. The assigned pages are always due on Friday. The problems will cover a range of standards. Please assist your child if they have questions or encourage them to mark the problem so that they can ask about it when we review the strategies and answers when we review them in class.

This week in science, we will continue our study of minerals. Students will take a quiz on Thursday. For this quarters science extra credit, students can bring in a rock/mineral or a book on rocks and minerals. They must present to the class and their classmates will ask them questions. On Friday of this week we will begin to study about the classification of rocks.

Week of January 31, 2022

Happy Monday Everyone,

I hope everyone had a nice warm weekend. Coming home today is a flier for our Valentine's Day Celebration. We will celebrate by letting the kids exchange valentine cards with their classmates. We are hoping that everyone will participate and bring a card for every member of our class. We are also inviting the kids to create a valentine box to hold their cards. We will have our celebration on Friday 2/11 at the end of the day. Families with students in my homeroom be on the look out for a separate email with a Sign Up Genius link.

This week in math we will learn how to compare fractions using various strategies. We will start on Monday by comparing fractions to benchmarks. For example to compare 2/6 to 3/4 one might reason that since 2/6 is less than 1/2 and 3/4 is greater than i/2 that means that 2/6 < 3/4. Students will also learn how to compare by drawing models such as number lines, tape diagrams and area models. When using models it is important for students to recognize that they must be the same size. By the end of the week students will be compare fractions by using multiplication and division to create common denominators.
For this week's Freckle homework on Fraction Word Problems, please do not provide any assistance. I am using the information on how students answer to help me make groups for a lesson that we will be completing next week. Their score on this assignment will be based on whether students complete the work.
Next week students will be receiving an FSA review packet. Students will be assigned pages to complete at the beginning of the week. The assigned sheets will not be due until Friday. In the packet students will see a mix of problems that model problems that students will answer on the FSA. At this point most of the standards covered in the packet will cover previously learned materials, however we still have customary measurement, the remainder of our fraction standards and decimals to cover. Please feel free to assist your child in this work. They may also bring home and use their math journals for help.
This week in science we will begin using a new district program called Study Island. Study Island is a online program that we will use to reinforce our science work. In order to access the program please follow the directions below.
1 Go to www.duvalschools.org
2 Scroll to the bottom of the screen and click Blended Learning. Study Island is not listed on the Blended Learning on One View.
3 Click on Study Island
4 This week's assignment is on Weathering and Erosion.
This is a new program for students and myself. So please feel free to ask any questions.
