*40 minutes
*Teacher Assigned Lesson: Decompose Fractions

This week in science we will begin our study of space. During this unit we will learn the difference between Earth's rotation and Earth's revolution and the impact both have on our daily lives. In third grade students learned about constellations. In fourth grade students will learn why the positions of those constellations appear to move across the sky and why we see different constellations throughout the year. We will also learn about the phases of the moon. And finally we will learn about the impact that space exploration has had on our state.
For our study of moon phases students are required to describe the changes in the observable shape of the moon over the course of a month. Students will be working on a month long project to observe the moon. Students are coming home today with a moon calendar. Students just need to use a pencil to shade the the shape of the moon each day for the month of March. Since the moon rises at different times depending on the phase, I will have a calendar in the room that students are welcomed to copy. Students can also use the following website https://stardate.org/nightsky/moon
Students can still earn extra credit for bringing in items related to our study of rocks and minerals. I am now opening it up to items related to space. This can be items from trips to the Space Center and books on space that students have read.

This year students will be presented with data (usually in fractional amounts). Students will have to answer questions about the data. In order to answer the questions students will have to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers. We will also continue working on our skills for adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers.

This week in math our module on fractions continues. Students will take a quiz on the work that we have done on fractions on Wednesday 2/10. This week we will continue working on addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers. Students will also begin working on building line plots with fractional units. They will also answer questions based on those line plots. Line plots are a concept that students would have worked with in both second and third grade. Their work in those previous grades would have used whole numbers and been centered around data collection.
This week students will be receiving an FSA Review Packet. The questions in the packet will review concepts that we have already covered this school year. Students will be assigned pages to complete each week. The assigned pages will always be due on Friday. Students may seek your help when completing problems. They may also look back in their journals for assistance. Please have your child mark any problems that they find difficult or have questions about. They should either come in before school and I will go over it with them or they can ask on Friday's when we check the work from that week.
Teacher Assigned Lesson: Classify Quadrilaterals

This week in science we will begin learning about the classification of different types of rocks. Students will learn about igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rock groups. Students will also learn how the rock cycle causes one type of rock to change into other types of rocks.
Students can earn extra credit on their science grade if they bring in minerals or rocks and present it to the class. They can also bring in a book on rocks and minerals to present.

We will celebrate Valentines Day on Friday February 12th. Students are invited to make a Valentine Box and bring in cards for their classmates. Due to Covid-19 safety protocols, students must bring in their cards and boxes no later than Monday February 8th. The cards and boxes will sit untouched to quarantine for the week. Be on the look out for a class list from each homeroom teacher. I have created a Sign Up Genius for my homeroom for a few needed items. If you are interested in helping out please click on the link below.

This week in math we will complete our work on comparing fractions. On Tuesday we will begin working on adding and subtracting fractions. This will be different from our previous work of adding and subtracting fractions with fractions that had common denominators and were less than one whole. We will begin using whole numbers, mixed numbers and unlike denominators. Students will learn a variety of strategies to master this standard.

*Teacher Assigned Lesson: Identify Angles
*Complete at least 1 lesson from Learning Path
*40 total minutes

This week in science we will begin learning about minerals. Students iwll learn that minerals are different from rocks. Minerals are the building blocks of rocks. Some rocks only contain only one mineral and some rocks contain many different kinds of minerals. Students will also learn the properties geologists use to identify minerals. We will also discuss how minerals are used in our everyday lives. This is a short lesson that we will spend just this one week covering. Students will take a quiz on Friday covering lesson 1 (weathering and erosion) and lesson 2 (minerals).
