This week in math students will complete the math PMA for quarter 2. We will continue our work on geometry. Students will learn how angles and circles are related. The measure of angles can be written in degrees and as a fraction in relation to a circle. A 1-degree angle can be also be written as 1/360 since a circle has 360 degrees.
This week in science we will continue our work on energy. This week we will focus on heat energy. Heat moves from warmer places and objects to cooler places and objects until both are the same temperature. Students will learn about the three ways heat moves; conduction (heat transfer where objects touch), convection (heat transfer within a liquid or a gas) and radiation (heat transfer with out matter to carry it. We will test all of our energy standards when we complete unit 8. We are tentatively planning our test for Tuesday 12/14.

This week in math we will take a brief break from our work on geometry so that we can review before our upcoming PMA test. This time the test will be 2 sessions long. The test will cover Modules 1, 2 and 3. We reviewed students' PMA report from PMA 1 before leaving for Thanksgiving Break. Students should be bringing their report home to share their data with you. When they do please sign the bottom of the report so that I know that you did see the information. The standards tested on PMA 1 will also be included on PMA 2. If you would like your child to practice, they should log in to Freckle. Once logged in, they should click on the Practice button. On the next screen they will see all of the Domains in math. They simply click on the one that they would like to practice. Next scroll through the path until you find the one you want and click it.
This week in science, we will continue working on our unit on energy. We will finish up sound with a lab and discuss how we use the kinetic energy of moving wind and water to produce electrical energy.
We will begin working on heat energy at the end of the week. Students will learn that heat moves from warmer places/objects to cooler places/objects. Once the temperature is the same the movement of heat stops. Students will learn about conduction, convection and radiation as the main ways heat is transferred. Students will also learn about what makes an object a good conductor or insulator.

Welcome to Science Week!!

Happy Monday Everyone,

Welcome to JBE Science Week!! Students will participate in activities everyday this week designed to increase their awareness of science in the world around them.

JBE CELEBRATES SCIENCE WEEK! November 15-19

Monday “Say What?!?” Science  Dress up as a representation of your favorite science-related vocabulary word. Show off your costume as we parade around the school track!

Tuesday Keep Calm and Put Your Lab Coat On!  Did you know a Dipterologist is a scientist who studies flies? No? Then you are in luck! Wear a science themed shirt and prepare to learn about interesting science fields!

Wednesday Scientists Will Knock Your Socks Off!  It is time to learn about the “movers and shakers” in the field of Science! Then AND now! Wear silly or scientific socks as you learn about famous scientists!

Thursday Ride on the JBE Magic School Bus!  Forget Ms. Frizzle! Your teacher will take you on an exciting, virtual field trip today! Don’t forget to wear your class shirt!

Friday Scientists Are Good Sports!  They also use teamwork in their investigations! Dress to represent your favorite team as each classroom participates in a fun, hands-on Lab Experiment!

We will be going on our St. Augustine field trip on Tuesday 11/16. Students will participate in activities that go along with our social studies Florida History standards. There has been a change of plans to the activities we will complete. Instead of going to The Fountain of Youth, We will take a tour of the fort and have a trolley tour of the city. The field trip will take place on November 16th. Each class is allowed 10 chaperones. Chaperones must be approved on the DCPS Volunteer List. Chaperones will also be responsible for driving themselves to and from the field trip. Students must ride the bus to the field trip, but may be checked out by you after the activities are over. The cost of the field trip for students and chaperones is $14.  If you are interested in being a chaperone please use the pay online option to pay the fees and let your child's homeroom teacher with a note or an email.

Students are asked to wear their class shirts or a shirt with the same colors; Johnson-Green Lomblo-Royal Blue. Students will also need to bring a lunch packed in a paper or plastic bag with the students name on the outside of the bag.

This week in math, we will begin our module on geometry. This week we will learn the basics of points, lines, line segments, rays, acute angles, obtuse angles, right angles, parallel lines and perpendicular lines. Half the battle of geometry work is being familiar with the vocabulary. Please review these terms with your child as much as possible. Have them point these items out to you in their everyday lives. "The post of the fence intersects with the ground at a 90 degree angle. That means that the post is perpendicular to the ground."

This week in science, we will continue our work on sound energy. Students will complete a lab where they will see evidence that sound moves in waves and is made when their are vibrations in matter.
We will also begin learning how the kinetic energy of moving water and wind can be used to create electricity.

Monday: Math: Freckle Facts Practice and Multi-Digit Multiplication. Bring in notebook paper showing all work for the Multi-Digit Multiplication assignment.
Science: Unit 7 Lesson 3.

Tuesday: Field Trip Today

Wednesday: Math: Lessons 1 and 2 Homework Sheet

Thursday: Math: Lessons 3 and 4 Homework Sheet

Friday: Signed Progress Reports Due

*Module 3 Quiz

This week in math, we will begin working on OA.1.a, deciding if two equations are true or false with using computation.

The problem above is similar to ones that students will see in class and on various assessments. Students can not rely on the fact that 74-32=32 and 70-30=40 to tell that the two equations are not equal to each other. Students instead will use reasoning like pictured below to tell that the answer is letter b.

We will also work on OA.1.b, using relational thinking to find the value of a variable in one of the two equations. The answer to the problem below is letter d.

We will end the week working on OA.3.5, which deals with number and shape patterns.

This week in science we will continue our work with energy. Our focus for this week will be energy transformations. We will discuss how energy cannot be created or destroyed. It simply changes from one form to another. For example when you plug in a television and turn it on, the electrical energy from the plug is transformed into sound and light energy when the television is turned on.

Tuesday: Math: Lesson 24 Homework Sheet

Wednesday: Math Lesson 25 Homework Sheet
