This week in math we will leave equivalent fractions and begin comparing fractions. Students can compare fractions by giving both fractions common denominators, using benchmark fractions such as 1/2, 2/3 etc, or by using visual fraction models. Which ever strategy students use they must be able to explain and justify their reasoning.
We will have our next timed quiz this Friday. Please remember students now have 2 minutes to complete 50 problems.

This week in science we will complete our work with motion. Our test will be on this Thursday.
Our next unit will focus on weathering/erosion, rocks, minerals and earths resources.

Week of 1/13/2020

Happy Monday Everyone,

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. Unfortunately instead of the four day weekend that was originally on the calendar for this upcoming weekend, we will have to settle for a 3 day weekend. The weather day that was scheduled for Friday is a day of school due to the days we missed for the hurricane. We will have Monday off in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

This week in math we will continue to work on our fractions unit. Students will learn how to make visual models to explain how fractions that are made up of different numbers are equivalent. We will model equivalence with tape diagrams and the area models. Students will also learn how to use math strategies to find equivalent fractions.
On Tuesday and Wednesday we will take PMA #2. This PMA will be made up of questions from Modules 1-4. The test will be taken in two sessions. Session one is on Tuesday and session 2 is on Wednesday.
On Friday students will take their next set of timed quizzes. We are now in the third nine weeks so the time for our facts quizzes will now be 2 minutes.

This week in science we will begin working on our next unit, force and motion. At the end of this unit students will be able to explain motion, speed, acceleration and the effects forces have on motion. Since the units on heat and motion are short. The two will be combined to make one test.

Students have completed work on their first research question. This week students are expected to turn in their research for question 2.

Have a GREAT week,

Ms. Johnson
