Fraction Quiz on lessons 1-11

*Science Sheet of Force
*Unit 9 Test Forces and Motion

This week in math we will continue our work on fractions. Students will take a quiz on Tuesday. The quiz will cover everything we have done from lessons 1-11. After the quiz we will begin learning how to compare fractions. Students will be expected to compare fractions using visual fraction models, such as number lines, tape diagrams, and area models. Students will also learn how to compare using benchmark fractions. For example "I know that 2/8 is less than 3/4 because 2/8 is smaller than 1/2 and 3/4 is larger than 1/2. We will also learn how to give fractions with different denominators like denominators using multiplication and division.
We are now back on track with our i-Ready homework. This week students need to complete the Teacher Assigned Lesson, Identify Points, Lines, and Rays. The score students earn on this lesson will be entered into the grade book. Students will also need to complete another lesson from their learning path. If students complete the two lessons in under 40 minutes they should begin another lesson from their learning path.

This week in science we will continue our discussion on weathering and erosion. It is important that students understand the difference between weathering (the process of earth's landforms being broken or worn down) and erosion (the process of the pieces of worn down and broken rock being moved to another location).

Monday: Math: i-Ready: Complete 40 minutes Teacher Assigned lesson Identify Points, Lines and Rays plus a lesson from learning path (due Friday). Complete sheet on fractions.

Tuesday: Science: Complete sheet on Weathering and Erosion

Wednesday: Math: Complete lesson 12 sheet

Thursday: Math Complete lesson 13 sheet

This week in math we will continue to work in module 5. This week we begin to focus on using the operations of multiplication and division to find equivalent fractions.

Just about everyone has completed their i-Ready Winter Diagnostic. Students will bring home their journals this week to show you their growth. I am very proud of the progress that students have made since the beginning of the year. Even if your child only grew a few points, please celebrate them and their results.
Students will need to complete 40 minutes for this week's homework. I am setting the calendar to show me everything from January 1st until January 22nd. The vast majority of students have already completed their minutes. I will communicate with students what if anything they need to do to complete their minutes for the week.

This week in science we will begin working on our new unit, rocks and minerals. During the course of this unit we will study weathering and erosion, minerals, types and rocks and the natural resources found in Florida. This week we will begin learning the differences between weathering  and erosion. Weathering is the wearing down of rock on Earth's surface. Erosion is when the worn down rock gets moved away. As part of the discussion we will also learn about deposition. Deposition is when the moved rock is dropped in a new place. Students often confusion weathering and erosion because moving rock (erosion) also causes weathering. Moving rock and sand hits formations on earth surface and cause weathering.

Monday: No School 40 minutes of i-Ready due on Friday

Tuesday: Math: Complete Lesson 8 Homework. i-Ready Growth Data signed.

Wednesday: Science: Unit 4 Lesson 1 Digital Lesson due on Friday

Thursday: Math: Complete Lesson 10 Homework

Friday: i-Ready minutes due. Science digital lesson due. i-Ready growth data due.

Have a GREAT week,
Aesha

Week of January 11, 2021

Happy Monday Everyone,

I hope everyone had a nice weekend. Second quarter report cards and gifted progress reports are coming home on Monday 1/11. Please review the paper work inside the envelope. Sign the envelope and return it to school as soon as possible. All of the papers inside the envelope are yours to keep.

We have completed half of 4th grade!! With all that hard work your child has put it to having a successful year, they have used a lot of their supplies. Please check with your child about things like pencils and glue sticks, Many have somehow managed to loose their scissors. These supplies will be needed for the rest of the school year.

1/11 Monday
Second Quarter Report Cards go  home

1/12 - 1/13
i-Ready Math Diagnostic

1/15 Friday
Unit 9 Science Test

1/18 Monday
Martin Luther King Jr. Day - No School

School - To - Home Folder

*Lessons 1 and 2 Exit Ticket-Counted as a classwork grade

This week in math we will continue our work on fractions. On last Friday we began looking at ways to use a visual model to show that two fractions were equivalent to each other. We will continue with this concept this week.. We will begin to move past the visual models and explore how we can use math operations to generate equivalent fractions.

We will take the i-Ready Math Diagnostic on Tuesday and Thursday this week. Students do not have i-Ready homework this week.

This week in science we will complete our work on force and motion. Our test will be this Friday.

Monday: Math: Lesson 5 Homework Sheet

Tuesday: Science: Digital Lesson for Unit 9 Lesson 2

Wednesday: Science: Unit 9 Benchmark Review #'s 1-15 pages 435-436

Thursday: Science: Study for the science test.

Friday: Signed Report Envelopes are due. Science Digital Lesson due

Have a Fabulous Week!!

Week of January 4, 2021

Happy New Year Everyone,

I hope everyone had a wonderful and restful Winter Break full of fun, good food to eat and lots of time with family. Today is officially the first day of the 3rd nine weeks. We have managed to make it two nine weeks with only one day of virtual school!!

I would like to thank everyone for participating in our Winter Holidays and Traditions activity. It was nice to learn how everyone celebrates. I would also like to thank everyone for the wonderful Christmas gifts. I really appreciate your kindness and thoughtfulness.

1/4 Monday
Teacher Planning Day

1/5 Tuesday
Students Return from Winter Break

1/15 Friday
Unit 9 Science Test

1/18 Monday
Martin Luther King Jr. Day - No School

This week in math we will begin working on Module 5. In Module 5 we will work on our standards for fractions. This week we will learn how to decompose fractions in a variety of ways. If students are asked to decompose a fraction into unit fractions, then each fraction in the decomposition should have a numerator of 1. Sometimes students will be asked to simply decompose a fraction. In those situations the fractions used can have any number as the numerator, however the end result should equal the fraction in the question.
For Example:
Decompose 5/6 into unit fractions.
*5/6= 1/6 + 1/6 + 1/6 + 1/6 + 1/6
Decompose 5/6 three different ways.
*5/6= 2/6 + 3/6
*5/6= 4/6 + 1/6
*5/6= 3/6 + 1/6 + 1/6
We will also begin learning strategies to show fraction equivalence.
Now that we are in the third nine weeks, there will be an update to the weekly expectations for i-Ready. Students will now be required to complete at least one i-Ready lesson. During weeks that there is a teacher assigned lesson, students will need to complete two lessons; the teacher assigned and one from the students individual learning path. If students do not complete a lesson the grade they earn from their 40 minutes assignment will be lowered one letter grade. For example if a student does complete all 40 minutes of the assignment, but does not complete a lesson then a grade of 89 will be entered into the grade book for that week.
During the month of January students will be taking their second i-Ready diagnostic. This testing will take place at school. Depending on when we are assigned to take our test our normal weekly in class math lessons may change. As soon as I know when we are scheduled I will let you know. Please encourage your child to take their time during this diagnostic. They will be allowed to have scratch paper, however many students still try to do the majority of their work in heads because they don't feel like writing it down. This leads to careless mistakes. Students will also have plenty of time to complete the diagnostic, this test is not timed so students should not feel rushed. During the week we take the diagnostic students will not be required to complete their 40 minute assignment.

This week in science we will continue working on our unit on motion. This week will focus on forces, and how to calculate the speed, time it took for travel, or the distance traveled of a moving object. Using the formulas below
Speed = Distance/Time
Time = Distance/Speed
Distance = Speed x Time

Monday: Math: i-Ready Math 40 minutes due on Friday.

Tuesday: Math: PMA 2 Data Chat Report. Review the report with a parent. Have a parent sign the report.

Wednesday: Math: Complete Lesson 2 Homework sheet.

Thursday: Science: Complete Pack and Stack Worksheet

Friday: i-Ready minutes due. Signed PMA 2 Data Sheets due.

Have a wonderful week,
Aesha
