Week of October 26, 2020

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to another busy week at JBE. This week we will be recognizing Red Ribbon Week. We will participate in many fun activities designed to make students aware of the dangers of drugs. Please see the schedule below.
One of the activities is a Class Door Decorating Contest. The theme or our door is going to Minions and we will use the slogan; “There Are A Minion Reasons To Say No To Drugs”. Today at school, students received a minion and a post-it note. Students need to neatly color the minion and cut it out. Students may use markers, crayons or colored pencils to color their minion. On the post-it note they should write their name at the top and then write their reason for saying no to drugs. When complete stick the post- it note on the minion and return it to school any time before next Friday.

Mon. WEAR RED- “PROUD TO BE DRUG FREE!” (students receive red mask)

Tues. WEAR TYE-DYE /HIPPY “PEACE OUT TO DRUGS!”

Wed. WEAR an Orange Shirt- To show that we are against drugs and bullying.

Thurs. WEAR SAFFARI GEAR “WILD ABOUT BEING DRUG FREE!”

Fri. WEAR SPORTS TEAM T-SHIRT “TEAM UP AGAINST DRUGS!”

Over the past several weeks I am discovering that many students do not fluently know their multiplication facts. In order for students to be successful with the work that we are doing in Module 3 it is dependent on them having quick recall of multiplication facts.  Please visit the sites below for more facts practice.

This week in math we will begin working on our standard for solving division problems. In this standard students will learn strategies for solving problems. Just like with our multiplication standard, students will not learn the algorithm. If students know the long division algorithm they may use it as a checking strategy. Please see the examples below of the strategies that students will learn in class.
Area Model
Partial Quotients

Distributive Property
Multiplying Up

This week in science we will continue learning about chemical and physical changes in matter.

Monday: Math: i-Ready Teacher Assigned Lesson on Metric Mass and 40 minutes.

Tuesday: Science: Unit 6 Lesson 2 Digital Lesson

Wednesday: Math: Complete work on division strategies.

Thursday: Math: Freckle Assignment: Multi-Digit Multiplication: Turn in sheet showing work done.

Friday: Signed report card envelopes due. All digital homework due.

Week of 10/19/2020

 Happy Monday Everyone,

Welcome to the 2nd Nine Weeks of Fourth Grade!! We made it through the first quarter. Normally that is something that we probably wouldn't take note of, but during this Pandemic I think it's something to celebrate. Students are mostly doing a great job in handling all of our new rules. However we do have a few things to address especially since two schools in the district are now fully virtual because of the number of Covid positive cases on their campuses. Please speak with students about the need to properly wear their masks so that their nose and mouth are fully covered. Students need masks that properly fit them so that their nose and mouth are properly covered. When students sneeze or cough they should not pull their mask down and sneeze/cough into the air. Students should care an extra mask in their backpack just in case they need to change their mask.

This week in math we will finish up our work with multiplication strategies. On Monday students will solve multi-step word problems using addition, subtraction and multiplication. On Tuesday students will complete multiplication work focused on two digit by two digit multiplication problems. On Wednesday we will take a quiz on application of the formulas for area and perimeter and multiplication strategies. On Thursday we will begin looking at factors, multiples and prime and composite numbers.

This week in science we will begin working on Unit 6 Matter and It's Changes. In this short two lesson unit we will learn about the differences between physical and chemical changes. This unit will last about two weeks.

Monday: Math: Complete problems on multi-step, multi-operation problems. Complete 40 minutes of i-Ready and Teacher Assigned Lesson

Tuesday: Math: Freckle: Multi-Digit Multiplication Review.

Wednesday: Science: Complete Unit 6 Lesson 1 Digital Lesson on HMH Science

Thursday: Math: Complete sheet on finding factors of numbers

Week of October 12, 2020

 Happy Monday Everyone,

Welcome to the last week of the first nine weeks. The first quarter will end on this Thursday. All grade recovery and make up work needs to be completed by :Thursday in order to earn credit. If students need to complete make up work they can come in to the classroom before school beginning at 8:00. I am also available after school. I can also pull students from computer lab resource this week in order to complete make up work.

This week in math we will continue learning strategies for solving multiplication problems. On last Friday we learned how to use the area model.

This week we will learn how to use the partial products strategy:

and the distributive property strategy:
In fourth grade we will not cover the multiplication algorithm. Students may use it as a checking strategy if they wish, but can not use it as the main form of showing work.

On Tuesday, students will take the Districts PMA 1 test for math. This test will cover the work that students have done during the first quarter of the year in math. The test will count as a quiz grade.

This week in science we will complete our work on matter. Our test on unit 5 will be on Wednesday. We will then begin our work on physical and chemical changes in matter.

Monday; Science: Digital Lessons for lessons 4, 5, and 6 (due on Thursday)
Math: i-Ready Minutes (40) and Teacher Assigned Lesson (due on Thursday)

Tuesday: Math PMA today. Study for unit 5 science test

Wednesday: Science test today. Math: Complete sheet on multiplication strategies

Thursday: i-Ready work due. Science digital lessons work due.

Friday: No School Teacher Planning Day

Week of October 5, 2020

Happy October Everyone,

Thank you to everyone that gave to the Fall STEM Fundraiser. You helped our class win a virtual field trip to the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. In a year of no field trips this will be a welcomed treat for the students. Your generosity will also help all of the students at JBE have STEM resource next school year.

This week in math we will begin Module 3. Module 3 is a big unit we will work on application of the area and perimeter formulas, strategies for solving multiplication and division strategies, finding factors and multiples of numbers, and prime and composite numbers. We will begin this week with application of the area and perimeter formulas. Students will apply what they learned in 3rd grade for finding area and perimeter. This year our work will center more on figuring out missing dimensions when either the area or perimeter is known.
For example:
*The perimeter of a rectangle is 120 cm. The length is 20 cm. What is the width of the rectangle?
*A rectangle is 2 meters wide. It is 3 times as long as it is wide. What is the length of the rectangle?
I want to assure everyone that even though student minute counters reset at the beginning of the week on i-Ready, I can see all of the minutes that students complete. I can customize the calendar to show me all of the minutes in a specific date range. I set the calendar to show me Friday to Friday. Unfortunately students do not have this ability.
This week in science we will learn about the states of water. In fourth grade that means taking our knowledge of liquids, solids, and gases and focusing on how the molecules behave. Fun Fact, Water is the only naturally occurring substance on Earth that exists in all three states. We will also learn what it takes for water to change state.
We will also study another physical property of matter; magnetism. Students will take a look at why magnets behave the way they do and what factors make a magnet attracted to a magnet.

Monday: Science: Complete Conservation of Mass worksheet.
Math: Complete 40 minutes of i-Ready (due Friday)

Tuesday Math: Lesson 2 Worksheet

Wednesday: Science: Lesson 4 Digital Lesson What Are the States of Water and Lesson 5 Digital Lesson What Are Magnets

Thursday: Math: Lessons 3 and 4 Worksheet

Friday: i-Ready and science digital work is due

Have a GREAT week!!
