Howdy Everyone,
Welcome back to school!! The beginning of school is always such an exciting time of year. Seeing familiar faces and making new friends is always fun. Getting back into the routine of bed times and schedules not so much. We are going to ease slowly back into the flow this week. There are 4 homework assignments, 2 for students and 2 for parents.
Student homework will consist of two assignments this week. Fill out the Student of Week poster. Students can decorate their posters however they would like using whatever materials they would like. If students want to be considered for next weeks' Student of the Week for our class they should have it turned in no later than Thursday August 22nd. When students are selected for Student of the Week their poster will be displayed in the classroom. Students will then present their poster to the class. Student posters will then be displayed in the hallway. There is no due date for posters, but students can't be picked for student of the week until their poster has been turned in.
The second homework assignment is for students to bring back their packet of forms. Be on the look out for the class t-shirt order form. Students need to wear their shirt for field trips and on play day. My homerooms shirts are green and Ms. Billiard's shirts are orange.
Parent homework is to fill out the forms in the envelope that your child got on Friday at orientation and give it to your child to return. Once you make it through the mountain of forms in the envelope I would love for you to write me a letter telling me about your child. There is no due date, but I would love to know about your child both in and out of school. You can send me a hand written copy or an email (johnsona4@duvalschools.org).

This week in math we will begin Module 1. The mathematical emphasis in this module will be on place value. For place value we will work with numbers up to 1,000,000. This week we will write numbers in different forms (standard form, word form, expanded form and unit form).
For example: 524,693
standard form-524,693
word form-five hundred twenty-four thousand, six hundred ninety-three
expanded form-500,000 + 20,000 + 4,000 + 600 + 90 + 3
unit form- 5 hundred thousands, 2 ten thousands, 4 thousands, 6 hundreds, 9 tens, 3 ones
The unit form for the same number could also be written as:
52 ten-thousands, 46 hundreds, 93 ones
Students typically do well with standard form, word form, and expanded form. Some students have trouble with changing numbers from unit form to standard form. One helpful strategy is to multiply the number by the word.
52 x 10,000= 520,000 46 x 100= 4,600 93 x 1= 93
520,000 + 4,600 + 93= 524,693
We will also explore strategies for comparing and ordering multi-digit whole numbers.
This week in science we will begin working on unit 1. In this unit we will learn how scientists do their work. We will explore the basic science process skills that we will use throughout the school year. We will also learn about the scientific method.
Students can access their science book through the Blended Learning tab on the district portal. Students simply need to log in to the internet (Chrome works best). Once you are in the Blended Learning folder, scroll down to Ed Your Friend in Learning.
