*Module 1 Math Test
*Unit 1 Science Test

This week in math we will complete our work on the metric system. Students will take the test on Friday.. Students will be tested on being able to name the appropriate united needed to measure various objects. Students will also be tested on being able to convert metric units. Students are only required to convert from larger units to smaller units. Students will also be allowed to use their reference sheets on the test so they do not have to have conversions memorized.

This week in science we will continue our work with matter. This week we will learn how to observe properties of matter by using a pan balance. We will also discuss the Law of the Conservation of Matter. This law states that the mass of a whole object is equal to the mass of the same object when broken into pieces.
Monday: Math: Complete Teacher Assigned Lesson on Understand Place Value and 40 minutes

School to Home Folder
The only graded work we had last week was done on Friday so students will not have any math or science assessments in their folders this week. They will have their first quarter progress reports in the folder. Please review the grades, sign the bottom and return it in the folder.

This week in math we will finish our work in Module 1. We will take our test on Tuesday. We will then begin working on module 2. In module 2 we will work on our measurement standards. Students will learn how to convert metric units. Students do not have to memorize conversions. They will be given a reference sheet to use. They can use their reference sheet on all assignments, including classwork, homework, quizzes and tests. We will only convert from larger units to smaller units (5 kilograms = ? grams). Students will also need to be able to decide which units would be the best to measure specific items ( What unit would you use to measure the length of a hallway? centimeters, meters or kilometers?). We will also have to solve word problems using measurements (Scarlett ran 500 meters. Drew ran 5 kilometers. What is the total distance Scarlett and Drew ran?).
We are beginning i-Ready for homework this week. Students are required to complete at least 40 minutes of i-Ready each week. Students should not complete more than an hour of minutes in a week. Students have a week to complete their work. The week begins on Friday afternoons and ends the following Friday morning. Families are welcome to break up the 40 minutes any way that works best for them. Students will be assigned one lesson by me each week. The lesson will cover a topic that we have already worked on in class. Two grades will be entered into the i-Ready category on Focus each week. One grade will come from total completed minutes (see chart below) and the other will come from the score they earn on the lesson I assign. If i-Ready minutes are not done they can not be made up. Students can make up the missed teacher assigned lesson. We have finally gotten 6 student laptops for classroom. If students have difficulty getting on line at home they are welcome to come into the classroom before school to work on their minutes. If students stay for extended day they can also come to the classroom to work on their minutes with their extended day teachers' permission. On days that I stay past 3:10.
i-Ready Minutes
40 minutes completed - 100%
35-39 minutes - 90%
30-34 minutes - 80%
25-29 minutes - 70%
15-19 minutes - 60%
10-14 minutes - 50%
1-9 minutes - 30%
0 minutes - 0%

This week in science, we will begin working on our next unit on Matter. We will begin working on Unit 5 Lesson. In this lesson we will focus on our standard on properties. Students will be able to measure and compare objects and materials based on their physical properties including mass, shape, volume, color, hardness, texture, odor and taste.

Monday: Math: Lesson 16-18 worksheet, Review for math test

Tuesday: Science: Complete Lesson 1 What Are Physical Properties of Matter Digital Lesson on HMH Science (Ed)

Wednesday: Science: Complete pages 243-246 in science book.

Thursday: Math: Lessons 1 and 2 worksheet

Week of September 14, 2020

 Happy Monday Everyone,

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.

Students are bringing home their Home-to-School Folders today. The folder is red and students should have it either in their trapper or backpack. This folder will come home on the first day of the school week. Inside the folder you will find graded work. The papers are yours to keep unless your child needs to complete a grade recovery activity. Grade recovery is a process where students can recover points missed on assessments. For math and science the points recovered should bring their score up to a passing grade. Grade recovery happens when a student earns a grade of 69 and below. The directions for the recovery will be stapled to the assignment. Students are allowed to use their math and science journals and science book while completing the work.. Once students complete the work they bring it back to school and turn it to the designated basket in their classroom. Once I regrade it, the score will be updated in Focus. The red folder should come back to school as soon as possible so that work for the next week can be added.

September 1st-30th
PTO Fall Fundraiser

Friday 9/18
Unit 1 Science Test

Monday 9/21
Progress Reports Come Home

Wednesday 9/23
Module 1 Math Test

This week in math we will continue our work with the addition and subtraction algorithm. Students may need additional practice with subtracting across zeros when regrouping is needed. We will also work solving multi-step word problems. We will end the week learning how to find the missing digit in algorithm problems (see the example below)

    304,822

+ 48  ,684

791,506    In this problem students would need to figure out the missing digit in the thousands place. In problems like these the regrouping (carrying) is deliberately left off. The answer is 6.

A parent asked me about the standards in an email so I thought that I would share with everyone, The 4th grade standards can be accessed by visiting:   http://www.fldoe.org/academics/standards/subject-areas/math-science/mathematics. On the site you can visit a parent section. The teacher version of the standards can be found at: http://www.fldoe.org/core/fileparse.php/12087/urlt/G4_Mathematics_Florida_Standards.pdf

Here is a list of our modules and content

Module 1 place value and addition/subtraction

Module 2 metric measurement conversions

Module 3 factors/multiples, primes/composite, area and perimeter, multiplication/division, customary measurement conversions

Module 4 geometry

Module 5 fractions

Module 6 decimals

This week in science we will finish unit 1 with a study of lesson 4, What kinds of models do scientists use? Students will have homework on Brain Pop. This year students will access Brain Pop through the Blended Learning drop down menu on One View/Duval Homeroom. It can also be accessed on the Student Software page. We will also have homework on HMH Science page/Your Friend Ed. We will take a science test for unit 1 on this Friday. The test will cover the material from unit 1 in our science book. The test will be 22 multiple choice questions.

Week of September 7, 2020

 Dear Parents,

Welcome to another week of our JBE Safari. I hope everyone had a wonderful 3 day weekend and is ready for a short week of school. I would like to thank everyone for participating in our Virtual Open House last Thursday.

Monday 9/7

No School-Labor Day

Tuesday 9/8
Science Quiz on Lessons 1 and 2

Wednesday 9/9
Math Quiz on Module 1 Lessons 1-10

This week in math we will continue our work on Module 1. Students will take their first quiz on Wednesday. The quiz will cover comparing numbers with <, >, and =, rounding numbers, converting numbers from unit form to standard form, and representing numbers in different forms.
We will also begin working on two new standards this week. Students will begin learning how to use the standard algorithm to add and subtract numbers. We will also begin working on solving multi-step word problems.

This week in science we will learn how students collect and record data.. We will get an intro to different science tools. Students will learn about microscopes, hand lenses, pan balances, tape measures, spring scales, and thermometers. Scientist use these tools to collect data during their observations and investigations. We will also learn how scientist record and display their data. and finally how they use the data that they collect. Students will take a quiz on lessons 1 and 2 on Tuesday. Students are allowed to use their books and journals during quizzes, so please make sure both are at school.
