Week of 2/10/2020

 Happy Monday Everyone,

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. I would like to thank everyone in both classes that came in for student led conferences. It was awesome to watch students speak with you about the progress that they are making in fourth grade. Please remember that there is no school on this coming Monday 2/17. We will be off in observance of President's Day. School will resume on Tuesday 2/18.
The Starfish Stampede fundraiser kicks off this week. Please see the calendar of events that was sent home.
Progress reports will be sent home this Wednesday. Please review the form, sign it and send it back to your child's homeroom teacher as soon as possible.

We have a field trip to St. Augustine on Monday March 16th. This is the Monday after spring break. This field trip supports our learning standards for Florida History. The cost of the trip is $14 for students (this is the price before bus fees are added). The price for chaperones is $18. All chaperones will have to provide their own transportation to St. Augustine. Due to limited space we are only allowed 4 chaperones per class. If you would like to be a chaperone please send me a note or email. If we have more than 4 parents interested, I will draw names.

Happy Super Monday Everyone,

Whether your team won or loss there are two things almost everyone can agree on, 1 it was a very good game 2 everyone is tired today from staying up to watch it.

This week in math we will finish our work with common denominators. We will then begin working on the next part of our adding fractions standard. Students will learn how to add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers. Students will add and subtract fractions with like denominators. Students will learn how to subtract mixed numbers, when the fraction with the largest whole number is smaller than the fraction with the smaller whole number.
For Example

This week in science we will take our test on heat and motion. Our next unit of study will be unit 4, Rocks, Minerals and Resources. We will begin the unit with a study of weathering, erosion and deposition. This week we will focus on weathering. There are two types of weathering, physical weathering and chemical weathering. In physical weathering forces like water, wind and plant growth wear rocks on Earth's surface down and break them apart.

I hope everyone has a wonderful week!!

Happy Literacy Week,

This week is Literacy Week, please see the Important Dates section for special activities that students will get to do at school this week.

Thank you to all of Ms. Billiard's homeroom for participating in Student Led Conferences last Friday. The students were very excited to share with you all of the progress they have made this year learning new all of the fourth grade standards. Conference Day for my homeroom will be on Friday 2/7. Thank you to everyone for signing up so quickly. If you have not selected a time please go https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c054fa5a622a75-msjohnsons1 to select a time that is convenient for your schedule.

This week in math we will leave equivalent fractions and begin comparing fractions. Students can compare fractions by giving both fractions common denominators, using benchmark fractions such as 1/2, 2/3 etc, or by using visual fraction models. Which ever strategy students use they must be able to explain and justify their reasoning.
We will have our next timed quiz this Friday. Please remember students now have 2 minutes to complete 50 problems.

This week in science we will complete our work with motion. Our test will be on this Thursday.
Our next unit will focus on weathering/erosion, rocks, minerals and earths resources.

Week of 1/13/2020

Happy Monday Everyone,

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. Unfortunately instead of the four day weekend that was originally on the calendar for this upcoming weekend, we will have to settle for a 3 day weekend. The weather day that was scheduled for Friday is a day of school due to the days we missed for the hurricane. We will have Monday off in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

This week in math we will continue to work on our fractions unit. Students will learn how to make visual models to explain how fractions that are made up of different numbers are equivalent. We will model equivalence with tape diagrams and the area models. Students will also learn how to use math strategies to find equivalent fractions.
On Tuesday and Wednesday we will take PMA #2. This PMA will be made up of questions from Modules 1-4. The test will be taken in two sessions. Session one is on Tuesday and session 2 is on Wednesday.
On Friday students will take their next set of timed quizzes. We are now in the third nine weeks so the time for our facts quizzes will now be 2 minutes.

This week in science we will begin working on our next unit, force and motion. At the end of this unit students will be able to explain motion, speed, acceleration and the effects forces have on motion. Since the units on heat and motion are short. The two will be combined to make one test.

Students have completed work on their first research question. This week students are expected to turn in their research for question 2.

Have a GREAT week,

Ms. Johnson

Thank You

I would like to thank everyone for the wonderful Christmas and Holiday gifts. It was so thoughtful notes and gifts me so much to me. It was so kind of you to think of me.

Thank You,

This week in math, we will take our end of module test for geometry. Students will take their test on Tuesday. When we return to school in January we will begin module 5. Our new module will cover fraction concepts. Students will learn how to decompose fractions, add and subtract fractions, multiply fractions by fractions and whole numbers, how to change an improper fraction into a mixed number, how to compare fractions with unlike denominators, and how to find equivalent fractions.
Students will have an optional assignment to complete during winter break. I will give students a hard copy in class. I will also email a copy to parents. Students can earn both extra credit for their math grade and tickets.

This week in science we will dicuss conductors and insulators. Conductors are materials that let heat pass easily through them and insulators limit the amount of heat that is let through. We will discuss that sometimes having one type of material is better than the others, depending on the job to be done.

Have a wonderful winter break,

Week of December 2nd

Happy Monday Everyone,

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving break. Time off to spend with family and friends. We will be on Winter Break in 3 short weeks. In the meantime our schedule is full of activities. Please see the Important Dates section below.

Because of the passing of Joe Dewaele, we had a school counselor come in to speak with the students today.

As we draw closer to mid-year, please take this time to talk with your child a supply refresh. Many students have run out of glue and pencils. Some students have also managed to misplace their scissors.

This week in math students will learn how to use a protractor to both measure angles and draw angles of a specified degree. We will take a quiz on Thursday that will cover everything that we discussed so far in Module 4.

This week in science we will finish our unit on energy. Students will take their test on Wednesday. We will then begin working on a unit on heat energy. Students will learn what heat is and how moves. We will learn that heat moves from warmer objects/places to cooler objects/places until the temperture of both objects/places are the same. We will learn that heat is transfered in 3 ways. Conduction-heat transfer when objects touch each other. Convection-heat transfer through liquids or gases. Radiation-heat transferred without matter to carry it.

Have a great week,
Ms. Johnson
