Hi Everyone,
We had a successful first day of testing. Thank you for all of your support in helping students get ready for the test. Also thank you for sending in snacks and for the wonderful emails of good luck wishes. Students do not have any homework tonight. They may work on any of our internet platforms for practice if you our they wish. We will take session 2 on Tuesday morning. Students should get outside this afternoon and unwind. Get to bed tonight at a good time to allow enough time for lots of rest. Please have a good breakfast in the morning and come to school ready to ROCK the last part of our math test!!
Students do not have school on this Friday 4/14. We will take the reading FSA on Monday 4/17 and Tuesday 4/18. Students will need to get to bed on time Sunday and Monday nights so that they are prepared to read the many reading passages on the reading test.
This week in math we will, of course take our FSA math test on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday and Thursday we will take one of our end of the year diagnostic tests. After the taking the FSA our diagnostic tests should be a breeze. Next week we will begin two simultaneous units. One unit will have us covering some concepts to get ready for 5th grade math, Step Up to 5th Grade. The other will be a unit where we will use the math that we have learned over the past two years, Dream House.
In science this week we will learn about food pyramids and food chains. We are nearing the end of our plants and animals unit. Have students think about where their food comes from and how we get energy from the things that we eat.
We will work on our social studies on Thursday this week since there is no school on Friday. Students should have read and annotated chapter 6 lessons 1 and 2. Students were supposed to have read both lessons and taken notes in their science journals. This was homework last week and the week before. Please make sure that students have completed this assignment.

Week of April 3rd
Hi Everyone,
Mrs. Pavlinek and I are extremely grateful to everyone that donated to our Donors Choose projects last week. Both of our projects were fully funded!! We have already received the tablets and are learning how to use the Seesaw program.
After receiving the tablets we have realized that they are extremely fragile. We both have started another Donors Choose project to purchase cases and screen protectors for the tablets. If you are interested in giving to either project you may use the links below.

Your child should have brought home their report card on last Friday. Please review all of the enclosed papers; report card, FSA Testing information, virtual school information, and gifted progress report (for those that are in the Gifted Program). All of the enclosed paperwork is for you to keep. We just need for you to sign the outside of the envelope for the 3rd nine weeks and return it to school no later than Friday.
This week in math we will finish up our unit on measurement. Students have been learning about both the metric and customary systems of measurement. Students will need to know which units are best for measuring different objects. Students will also need to be able to convert within each system. Students will not have to convert metric units to customary units. We will also learn how to convert units of time. Students do not have to memorize the conversion numbers. They will get a reference sheet to use during the test. Students were given a copy to use in class and on their homework. It can also be found at Measurement Reference Sheet.
To further help us to see what to expect on the day of testing, students have taken a practice test for math. We learned how to navigate through the test, how to answer the different types of responses, and how to use the different mathematical tools. You can see the practice test that we took by going to Math Practice Test.
We will finish up our work in our FSA practice books both in class and for homework. For computer homework this week I am asking students to work on Prodigy. There is a special FSA review section that has been assigned. Students need to do complete at 30 minutes. Please complete more if you have time.
This week in science we will learn about the different parts of a food chain. Students should begin using words like producers, consumers, and decomposers when describing different plants and animals. What would happen if all of the producers died off?
This week in social studies we will learn about the Civil War. We have already discussed the causes of the war. This week we will take a closer look at the war itself, the Gettysburg Address, and time period immediately after the war.

Week of March 27th
Welcome Back from Spring Break,

This week in math we will spend time learning about patterns. Did you know that each individual part of a pattern is called a term? Students will be asked to figure out a certain number term in a pattern. Students will be given both number and picture patterns on problems. Usually students will be given a portion of a pattern and asked to either:
*figure out the number of items for a future term (given 4 terms, what is the 10th term).
*figure out the equation that could be used to solve for a given term. The equations will use both blanks and variables to stand for unknowns (students have solved these types of problems on Math Superstars all year).
*given an input/output table and asked what rule was used to make the table.
*use a given rule to fill out a table (the first number is 80, fill in the table using the rule divide by 2 and add 4)
In science this week we will learn about ecosystems. Students will learn about the different parts of an ecosystem.
Ecosystem---Community--Habitat--Population--Niche--Organism
Students will also learn about the different types of land biomes. Students will be working with a group to complete research, prepare a poster, and present the information to the class. This project will be completed in class this week and next. Students will not be required to do any of the work at home. They may bring in books from home. Students may also complete research or print pictures at home and bring it to class to use as part of their presentation. Students will receive a quiz grade on this project.
In social studies we will begin learning about the Civil War. This week we will learn about the causes of the Civil War and the Confederate States of America. Week of March 13th
Hi Everyone,
Happy last week before Spring Break!! Vacation for students begins on Friday due to a teachers planning day. Have a fun vacation but don't forget about school. Please complete some practice in your FSA practice folder and by using any of our computer sites: Ten Marks, Zearn, Prodigy, or i-Ready.
On Thursday we will go on our field trip to St. Augustine. This trip will help us to get up close to some of the topics that we have covered in social studies. We will visit the fort, Castillo de San Marcos. While at the fort we will learn about everyday life in the fort. How the fort was used to help the Spanish hold on St. Augustine during attacks by the British. We will also take a tour of the city where we will learn about Henry Flagler and how his efforts help our state after the Civil War. We will also visit the part of the city where Martin Luther King Jr. stayed when he was in St. Augustine.
Students should dress warmly because it will be windy and chilly. Students are asked to wear there class shirt, preferably will a long sleeve shirt under. Students should also wear long pants, we will be outside all day. They should bring a bag lunch with a drink. Students may also bring a hat, sunglasses and a camera.
As we head into spring break we want students to rest and have fun. I would also like for students to spend some time seriously working on as many of our computer learning platforms. Students will have access to i-Ready, Zearn, Prodigy and Ten Marks. Students will also have their FSA/Data folders to focus in on standards that they maybe having difficulty with. You can find activities on any of our computer platforms. You may also visit http://fsassessments.org/. For some fun games that are aligned by grade level and standard visit http://www.fsagames.com/. You can also find worksheets and games by searching on GOOGLE. Simply type in the standard and interactive games or worksheets.
On this site you will find information about the FSA and a math practice test. When we return from vacation we will cover our last few standards,
*MAFS.4.OA.3.5 (patterns--number and shape)
*MAFS.4.MD.1.1 (measurement conversion)
*MAFS.4.MD.1.2 (solve problems involving distance, intervals of time and money).
These standards are not difficult and we will work on them when we return to school.

A strategy that we are using in class is to find straight lines by covering up a portion of the diagram. For example to find angle ROT. I would use angle SOT. Since angle SOT equals 125 degrees, I would subtract that from 180 degrees. g = 55 degrees. I can now use angle ROT to help me find the measure of angle ROV by using the same procedure. To find angle VOS you could use the same procedure or you can add up the angles you know and subtract them from 360 degrees.
We will also learn about parallel lines, perpendicular lines and intersecting lines.

Also in math students will receive a folder for FSA review. In the folder are some sheets that we will use to review content for the FSA. Our test is going to be on Monday April 10th and Tuesday April 11th. Be on the look out for an additional data sheet in the FSA folder. This sheet will be broken down by standard to show how the students did on math scrimmage. We are doing lots of overall review in class and I pull kids for groups based on this data. Students can also be in charge of their learning by using this data sheet to find and complete additional review on www.zearn.org or www.floriddastudents.org. Students can look up information by standard on both of these sites for some practice and review. Please sign this sheet after you have reviewed the information. Data for standards mastery will be added later. These folders should be kept in their Trapper. Students are expected to have these folders with them daily.
This week in science students will take the test for chapter 7. So we will spend the week reviewing and preparing. The test will be on Friday. The vocabulary for chapter 7 will also be due on Friday.
This week in social studies we will take our test on Tuesday. If we have time we will begin looking at chapter 6. In chapter 6 we will begin learning about the Civil War. Since it is not a definite that we will get to start this week students do not need to read a lesson.

Week of February 27th
Hi Everyone,
I hope that everyone had a wonderful relaxing weekend.
I would like to thank Mrs. Guss (Riley) for coming in on Friday teaching us about the art of Henri Matisse. The students created some wonderful pieces of art. Please see our Shutterfly page for their pictures.
I would also like to thank Mrs. Drexler (Maxim) for volunteering to provide snacks and drinks for after the writing test. Don't forget that we will take the test on Tuesday 2/28. We will begin passing out materials at 8:50 so that we can start as close to 9:00 as possible. Please make sure that your child gets plenty of rest on Monday night and eats a good filling breakfast on Tuesday morning. Remind them that there is nothing to feel nervous about they have written many essays for Mrs. Pavlinek.
This week in math we will begin our geometry unit. We will learn about points, lines, line segments, rays, angles, and triangles. Students will also learn how to measure the size of angles and draw angles to a specified number of degrees using a protractor. Students will learn how to use both half circle and full circle protractors. If you don't have one you may want to purchase one so that your child can have one to use for completing homework.
This week in science we will continue to work with our bean plants. So far we are not having very much success. I think we may have gotten a bad batch of seeds. We will also learn about the life cycles of Florida animals. Students will learn about complete and incomplete metamorphosis. We will also take a field trip to our school gardens to hunt for the two types of angiosperms-monocots and dicots. We will complete this chapter this week. Look for us to take our test next week on Friday.
This week in social studies we will discuss Florida becoming the 27th state in 1845. We will also discuss the right to vote. We will discuss the 15th Amendment giving the right to vote to all men, the 19th Amendment giving the right to vote to all women, and the 26th Amendment which lowered the voting age from 21 to 18. We will also complete this chapter, look for our test to be next week on either Monday or Tuesday.

Hi Everyone,
I hope that everyone enjoyed their three day weekend! I know I did!! After two weeks of a crazy hectic schedules I am also looking forward to a semi normal week.
It is early release on Wednesday (tomorrow) so plan on 1:30 dismissal. If your family collected pledges for Boosterthon, all money is due this Friday.
On next Tuesday we will be taking the Florida Standards Assessment for writing. Students will get 120 minutes to complete their essays. Mrs. Pavlinek and I are requesting a healthy snack and juice boxes for after the test is completed. If you would like to volunteer for one of the two please let your child's homeroom teacher know no later than Monday 2/27.
This week in math we will complete our study of decimals. The test for this unit will consist of two Standards Mastery tests on the computer and a paper pencil portion. Please see the chart below for the testing schedule.

Our next unit of study will be geometry and measurement.
This week in science we will begin learning about the life cycles of Florida plants. We will learn the difference between angiosperms (A plant that has flowers and makes seeds in a fruit, pod, or shell.) and gymnosperms (A plant that produces seeds in cones.). From that study we will then learn about the life cycles of Florida animals?
In social studies we will continue to learn how to discuss information rather than just repeat facts from our reading. When we discuss we take the information that was read and begin to answer the hows and whys behind that information. We pursue the cause and effect relationship behind the information. Discussion includes making inferences based on the information that was read.
An example of this from this week's reading: Students can show that they read the material by knowing what the benefits were to Florida becoming a territory. I am ready to discuss when I can explain how those benefits would be useful to someone that lived in Florida during this time period. To help your child read the lesson with them or have them read it to you and then talk about the material.
