Week of August 31, 2020

 Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. We ended up having to do a lot of diagnostic testing last week. Hopefully we will have a more normal instructional week.

We will have Open House this Thursday. Mrs. Peters and I will send you a link to join us for the meeting. The meeting starts at 6:00 and will be an hour long.

9/1 - 9/30
PTO Fall Fundraiser

Thursday 9/3
Virtual Open House @ 6:00

Friday 9/4
Virtual PTO Meeting @ 12:00

Monday 9/7
Labor Day-No School

This week in math we will work strategies for converting unit form into standard form.

For example; 40 hundreds is equal to 40 x 100 which equals 4,000.

3 thousands + 53 tens + 7 ones=3 x 1,000 + 53 x 10 + 7 x 1=3,000 + 530 + 7= 3,537

We will also learn about comparing numbers using >, <,  and = symbols. At the end of the week we will learn strategies for rounding numbers to any place. We will have our first math quiz next week.

The only homework this week is for students to take the Star Math Test. This test is a diagnostic similar to the i-Ready diagnostic that students took at school this week. Students should work alone without any help. Please do not give your child any help. Just tell then to look carefully at all of the answer choices and make their best guess. Students are allowed to use notebook paper but can not use any other tools like calculators or rulers. The results of the test will be better help me zero in on skills and standards that your child needs help with. In this way when I begin to pull small groups for math it will be productive learning for each child. To access the test students will need to log into One View. Then click on Blended Learning. Scroll down the list and find Renaissance Learning. Click on Star Math and begin working. Students should work for 20-30 minutes each day until the test is completed. If we do not finish the test this week, I will make it an assignment on next weeks homework.

This week in science we will work on the skills that scientist use as part of their jobs. Our discussion will center a lot on the steps of the scientific method.

Many of you have asked how you can help our classroom. Two big ways are to either give to my project on DonorsChoose or to purchase items off of my Amazon Wish List. If you are interested in contributed to either please click on the links below.

We will begin homework this week. Students will copy down their homework in their Agendas. Each nights homework is due the next day unless otherwise stated. Students receive credit for completing their homework and returning it. They are not penalized for incorrect answers. They are also not penalized for assignments being turned in late as long the assignment is turned by the end of the week.

This week in math we will be working on the following standards:

The work that we will complete this week will be similar to work students completed in 3rd grade. We will expand their knowledge by moving our numbers to the millions place.

This week in science we will begin working on Unit 1 Lesson 1. In this lesson we will learn what science is and how scientists do their jobs.
