This week in science we will begin our study of space. During this unit we will learn the difference between Earth's rotation and Earth's revolution and the impact both have on our daily lives. In third grade students learned about constellations. In fourth grade students will learn why the positions of those constellations appear to move across the sky and why we see different constellations throughout the year. We will also learn about the phases of the moon. And finally we will learn about the impact that space exploration has had on our state.
For our study of moon phases students are required to describe the changes in the observable shape of the moon over the course of a month. Students will be working on a month long project to observe the moon. Students are coming home today with a moon calendar. Students just need to use a pencil to shade the the shape of the moon each day for the month of March. Since the moon rises at different times depending on the phase, I will have a calendar in the room that students are welcomed to copy. Students can also use the following website https://stardate.org/nightsky/moon
Students can still earn extra credit for bringing in items related to our study of rocks and minerals. I am now opening it up to items related to space. This can be items from trips to the Space Center and books on space that students have read.
