Week of 1/24

Reading Can Take You Places

Hi Everyone,

Welcome to a full week of school (insert groan here)! At least there are lots of fun things planned in recognition of Literacy Week. Please refer to the list of activities below.

We are once again in need of disinfecting wipes. Students will earn 2 tickets for each container that they bring in for our class.  Due to our Covid-19 protocols, students are not allowed to drink directly from the water fountain. We are also in need of small cups to keep in the classroom for students that forget to bring a water bottle. I am looking for the small cups like ones you would have in your bathroom to use after brushing your teeth.

This week in math we will continue our work on fractions. This week we will work on equivalent fractions. Students will have use visual models and multiplication to both prove two fractions are equivalent and to generate equivalent fractions.
Students will have another timed quiz on this Friday. So practice, practice, practice.
On this week's Freckle homework students will complete their usual Fact's Practice. They will also have a new assignment titled Adaptive Practice for Base 10. This is a feature that I have never used before. Most of the students are probably unfamiliar with it too. On Adaptive Practice, instead of everyone getting the same questions, students will get questions based on their understanding of domain. As students progress the difficulty adjusts automatically, so each student is practicing at just the right level. This will allow students to practice at their level.

This week in science we will begin work on Unit 4, Rocks, Minerals and Resources. In unit 1 we will study the processes of weathering and erosion. Weathering is the process that wears down or breaks Earth's surface. This can be caused by water, wind, sand and small particles of rock, and plant and animal activity. Erosion is the process that moves rock, sand, and soil to other places. We will also discuss deposition, which is the process were rock, sand and soil is deposited in a new place.
Students often confuse these concepts so please review these terms at home.

This week in math, we will begin working on Module 5. In this module students will work on our fraction standards for fourth grade. This week we will learn how to decompose fractions in more than one way. Please help your child become familiar with the vocabulary listed below.
To learn these words students will be asked to write their answers using models and equations. This work will build the foundation that students will need in our next module on decimals.

This week in science, we will complete our work on Unit 9. Students will take their test on this Friday.

For science homework this week, students have been given two assignments on Brain Pop. Students will take a quiz on two clips that we have watched in class. The first is on Forces and the other is on Acceleration. I assigned the clips, but they are an optional part of the assignment. I recommend that students watch the clip first and then take the quiz. The grade that they earn on the quiz will be the grade that goes in to the grade book.
To get to the assignment, students need to log in to One View. Once loaded they should click on Blended Learning. Next find and click Brain Pop on the list. Once they get to the Brain Pop page they should click on the word Assignments at the top of the page. If they follow the directions above it will automatically sign them into to the program.

Week of 1/10/2022

Hi Everyone,
Welcome to another short week. Students will not have school on Friday due to a scheduled Weather Day. They will also not have school on next Monday due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

We do not have to worry to much about it being too cold here in the Sunshine State, however we will on occasion have some cold weather. We do end up have a few bitterly cold days here and there. When the high is only in the 50's we will insist on students having something on to keep them warm. This can be a sweatshirt, jacket or coat. If Mrs. Lomblo and I feel that the temperature is low enough we will ask them to add an added layer for recess. They may bring in an emergency sweatshirt or jacket to keep in their cubby or backpack.
Students are bringing home their 2nd Quarter report cards today. All of the paperwork inside of the envelope are yours to keep. You only need to sign the outside of the envelope where indicated and return it to school as soon as possible. You do not need to cut off the slip located on the bottom right hand corner.

This week in math we will complete our unit on geometry. We have one last lesson on the attributes of quadrilaterals that we will work on Monday and Tuesday. We will take our test on Thursday. When we return next week we will begin module 5. Module 5 is all about fractions.
Students will begin work on their second STAR diagnostic. STAR is the diagnostic component to Freckle. This work will be done in class. It will not count for a grade.
Students will bring home their PMA 2 test report. Our students did great!! Together our two classes had an average of 81% This is significantly higher than the district average. Please review the data with your child, sign the report and return it to school.
Before winter break, students learned about the relationship between angles and circles. We used those circles to create our very own Geome-Tree.

This week in science we will continue to work on force and motion. This week our focus will be on how different forces affect speed. We will also learn the differences between speed, velocity and acceleration.

Week of 1/3/2022

Happy New Year!!!

I hope everyone had a wonderful and restful Winter Break!! We are now officially in the 3rd Nine Weeks. Your child is halfway through their 4th grade year!!
As we return to school please use the list below to help your child get back into the groove of being back in school
*While there is no mask mandate, students are strongly encouraged to wear a mask when social distancing is not possible.
*Please ask your child to do a supply check. Many have lost their scissors. Some are out of pencils and glue. We will need these supplies throughout the second half of the school year.
*Please make sure your child has paper and pencil when they are completing math work on Freckle. A number of students are attempting to do all of the work in heads. Students are learning when mental computation is the best most efficient way to solve problems. However, for a great deal of their math students should be using paper and pencil to solve problems. When they use paper and pencil the strategies that they choose are up to them. This will also allow them to check their work before selecting an answer.
*When students have Freckle assignments that review specific standards, those assignments are based on work that we have previously worked on in class. If a student does not score a 70% or higher, Freckle will allow them to retake the assignment. I will always enter the higher score that the student earns.
*Technology homework is not due until the Friday of the week it is assigned. If your child does not complete the assignment by that Friday a zero will be entered into the gradebook. They are welcome to complete the assignment after the due date for full credit, however the grade may not be updated in Focus until the end of the quarter.
*Paper pencil homework assignments may also be completed after the due date for full credit. It is your child's job to bring it to me. I will not ask for it.
*When students are absent, they are still required to complete any work that they miss. In some cases It is difficult to give work early, but sometimes allowances can be made depending on the current lesson plan.
*If students are absent on the day a test or quiz is given, they will either need to come in early, or miss resource class in order to make up the assignment.

This week in math, we will learn about symmetry. When an object or shape has symmetry, you can cut it in half and the pieces are the same. The object can be folded on the line of symmetry and the pieces can folded on that line and the parts fit exactly on top of each other. Students will be asked to identify lines of symmetry on 2-D shapes as well as on letters and on everyday objects.
We will also begin learning about the different types of triangles. Did you know that triangles can be identified based on characteristics of their side lengths and by their angle measures.

This week in science we will begin working on our standards for force and motion. This will be our last unit for physical science. This unit only has two lessons in our book, so it will be relatively short.
During this unit we will learn what motion is and how different forces affect how objects in motion move. Students will learn about Newton's Laws of Motion, how to calculate speed and that acceleration doesn't just mean speeding up.

Monday: No School

Tuesday: Math: Freckle Fact Practice
Science: Unit 9 Lesson 1 Digital Lesson

Wednesday: Math: Lines of Symmetry Homework Sheet

Thursday: Math: Types of Triangles Homework Sheet

Have a GREAT week,
