Week of April 25th

Happy Monday Everyone,

We have reached the end of April. So that means that we have only one more month of school before Summer Vacation!! However, our Underwater Exploration is not over yet. I need everyone to hold on a few more weeks so that we have a successful testing season. Stay in those school time routines of getting enough sleep and completing assignments. That way we can end the year on a successful note.

This week in math we will begin working on our end of the year project based learning activity called Dream House. In this project students will work with classmates to design their very own dream house using many of the math skills that they have perfected this school year. Students will use multiplication, of both whole numbers and fractions/mixed numbers, adding/subtracting decimal numbers, area and perimeter and geometry. Students will use graph paper to create a blue print plan of their dream home. Students will be given a list of rules (building codes) that must be used to the house of their dreams. They will work with classmates to decide the number of rooms, the types of rooms and the layout of the rooms. Students have parameters such as a $500,000.00 price limit. Which hopefully after this project they will gain an understanding of the actual prices of things.
Before we begin the work students will need to gain a better understanding of how homes are laid out. And how to make a blue print plan with gives an overhead view of a home.

In order to do this students have a preliminary homework assignment to complete this week. For their Dream House homework I am asking that they do a simple blue print sketch of their home. Students will be given graph paper for this work. It does not have to show great detail. They also have some questions to answer about their home.

This week in science we will continue our work on the reproduction of plants. This week students will have the opportunity to plant seeds and grow their own plant.

Week of April 18, 2022

Happy Tuesday Everyone,

We have another short week since we were off on Monday and have a field trip on Friday. We will be going to the zoo on this Friday. Please read the Field Trip section for all of the info.

We will travel to the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens this Friday. We are asking students wear their class shirts and comfortable walking shoes. If your child ordered a lunch they won't need to bring a lunch box. If your child did not order a lunch please make sure they bring a bag lunch with a drink. Students may want to bring a snack to school to have when we get back. Students may also bring water bottles, sunglasses, a camera, and a hat or visor. We will be outside all day, so you may also want to apply sun screen before coming to school. What ever they bring they will be responsible for carrying. I suggest a light weight draw string backpack that will hold their items. With your permission students may bring a cell phone as a camera. Students are strictly prohibited from making/receiving calls or text messages. They may not play games or use the phone for anything other than taking pictures. We did not purchase the animal feeding program and we won't be visiting gift shops or concessions, so students will not need money for the field trip.
While at the zoo students will have an assignment to complete that go along with our Life Science standards. The activity will count as a lab activity and go in the gradebook as a quiz grade.

This week in math we will circle back to complete the second half of our measurement standards. Earlier in the year we covered the metric system. Students learned how to convert from larger to smaller metric units for length, mass, and capacity. We will now complete the same for customary units. Please view the reference sheet below to see the specific units that students will be asked to use. Fun fact students do not have to memorize the conversions on the reference sheet. They will receive a copy to use during both sessions of our FSA Math Testing. During this unit we will also cover time conversions, elapsed time and calculating start and stop times.

This week in science, we will begin working on our life science standards. This include both units 10 and 11 in our book. We will start out learning how plants reproduce. Students will learn the reproductive parts of flowers include both male and female parts. Students will also learn the process by which a flowering plant is pollinated and becomes fertilized and ready to make new seeds.

Week of 4/11/2022

Happy Monday Everyone,
Since we have this Friday and next Monday off, we will have two four day weeks in a row!! That's like having a second spring break.

Our field trip to the zoo will be on Friday April 22nd. Permissions slips were sent home last week. Please make your payment using the online address on the permission slip and return the permission slip no later than 4/14.

Students are bringing home their reports from the PMA 3 Math test. Our classes did really well on the test, the overall average for both classes 86%.  Please review the report and sign it. In the next few weeks students will bring home information on how to use their report to help prepare for the FSA test.

This week in science, we will complete our last lesson in unit 3. This week we will learn about the effects the space program has had on our everyday lives and how it effects the economy of our state. The test on unit 3 will be on Thursday.
If your child is interested in further exploration of space consider downloading the SkyView application to your phone. I use it myself. It is very easy to use. Open it and point it towards the sky. It will identify objects in the sky. Here are a few pictures I took from Friday night.

We will also revisit area and perimeter problems. This time the dimensions of the shapes will include decimal numbers.

This week we will continue the Superintendents Freckle Math Challenge. Each week beginning the week of 3-28 through 4-29 I will assign standards based lessons through our Freckle platform. Each week Ms. Mattingly will announce the top classes and students in grades 3-5.

Please use https://stardate.org/nightsky/moon to keep up with the phases of the moon. Students should use a pencil to shade out the part of the moon that we can not see. By the end of this week your child should be able to explain to you why the moon appears to change shape through out the month.
