Welcome to Another Fabulous Week at JBE,

     I hope everyone had a wonderful three day weekend. Our next long weekend will be next month. We are off on February 17th and 20th. 

     Students are bringing home their 2nd quarter report cards today. Review the paper work inside of the envelope. All of the papers are yours to keep. Sign the front of the envelope where indicated and send the envelope back to school as soon as possible.

     This week in math, we will begin Unit 10, Addition and Subtraction Strategies with Mixed Numbers. In this unit, students will use the same strategies from unit 9 except now the numbers in our problems will include mixed numbers and fractions greater than one.

     This week in science, we will complete our study of force and motion. Students will take their test on Friday 1/20.

Happy Victory Monday Everyone,

     What an exciting game on Saturday!! Our Jacksonville Jaguars were able to get the job done against the Tennessee Titans!! Although I do love the Titans because of #22, I had to root for my Jaguars on Saturday night!!

     From now until the end of the year, students are required to have a book with them to read in the hallway in the mornings before school. This would be a great way to get the reading done for book logs.

Book Character Parade

     This week in math, we will complete unit 9 on decomposing fractions, addition and subtraction of fractions. Our test will cover both unit 8 (equivalent fractions, plotting, ordering and comparing fractions) and unit 9. We will work on the study guide for unit 9 in class this week. I saved the unit 8 review for students that turned them in before we took the unit 8 quiz.. I have extra unit 8 reviews for any student that lost their review. 

     This week in science, we will continue learning about force and motion. This will be our last unit on physical science. When we finish this unit we will move to our earth/space science standards. This week we will begin learning that objects have a position. If the position changes the object is in motion. Objects can move in different ways: in a straight line, curved lines, or back and forth. Students will learn that speed tells you how the position of an object changes during a certain amount of time. Students will also learn how to calculate speed by dividing how far an object goes by the time it takes to get there. Students will also learn the difference between speed and velocity. Velocity is the speed and direction of an object. So for example, That she is walking at a speed of 3o meters per second. She is walking at a velocity of 30 meters per second south. And finally we will learn about acceleration. Acceleration is any change in velocity. An objects velocity changes if the object speeds up, slows down, or changes direction.

     This week in math we will begin working on unit 9. Unit 9 will be a continuation of our study of fractions. In this unit, we will focus on addition and subtraction meanings and strategies with fractions. We will decompose fractions as well as add and subtract fractions in mathematical and real-world contexts. 

In this unit we will cover the following standards:

*MA.4.FR.2.1 Decompose a fraction, including mixed numbers and fractions greater than one, into a sum of fractions with the same denominator in multiple ways. Demonstrate each decomposition with objects, drawings and equations. Example: 9/8 can be decomposed as 8/8 + 1/8 or as 3/8 + 3/8 + 3/8.

*MA.4.FR.2.2 Add and subtract fractions with like denominators, including mixed numbers and fractions greater than one, with procedural reliability. Example: The difference 9/5 − 4/5 can be expressed as 9 𝑓𝑖𝑓𝑡ℎ𝑠 minus 4 𝑓𝑖𝑓𝑡ℎ𝑠 which is 5 𝑓𝑖𝑓𝑡ℎ𝑠, or 𝑜𝑛𝑒.

*MA.4.AR.1.2 Solve real-world problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, including mixed numbers and fractions greater than one. Example: Megan is making pies and uses the equation 

1 3/4 + 3 1/4 = 𝑥 when baking. Describe a situation that can represent this equation.

Happy Monday Everyone,

     It's hard to believe but this is our last week of school before Winter Break!! We had a very different kind of school day on last Thursday and Friday. I would like to say again how well the students handled themselves while we were having our "Big Adventure" is how one of the kids described it and another said "That was a very different kind of fire drill." Mrs. Lomblo and I are very proud of them!! Ms. Mattingly even gave every class a large golden starfish for everyone's excellent behavior. 

    We will have our Winter Festival this Friday. Be on the look out for information from our Class Parents. The festivities will begin at 10:15 and the parents usually get here at about 9:30 to begin setting everything up. In addition to the fun activities that the parents are planning for us, Friday will also be pajama day. Students may wear their pajamas if they wish. Please make sure that your child wears regular shoes so that they can participate in recess.

Week of December 5, 2022

 

Happy Monday Everyone,

     We have two more weeks of school before Winter Break!!! That also means that there are only two weeks left in the second quarter. Since the our class white board was removed to prepare for the installation of our new white board/technology wall, I had to erase our list of which students had make up work to complete. I will be sending out emails to let you know if your child has work that needs to be completed. To complete make up work students can come to my room before school, after school or during one of their resource classes in order to complete the assignments. 

     With so many of the students have colds right now, we are going through our supply of tissue very quickly. Any students that donates a box of tissue to the class will earn 4 tickets.

    This week in math, we will be working on our fraction standards. This week we will cover, generating equivalent fractions using models, number lines, and multiplication and division facts. We will also cover comparing, ordering and plotting fractions on number lines. 

     On Wednesday and Thursday, students will take the District's PMA 2 for math. This test will cover all of the 4th grade standards. When I receive the data I will be focused on just those topics that we have studied so far this year. The test is broken into two sessions and students will get 60 minutes for each session. Please make sure your child gets plenty of rest and has a filling breakfast. 

     This week in science we will finish our discussion of heat energy. Heat (thermal) energy is the energy that moves between objects of different temperatures. Heat moves from warmer objects/places to cooler objects/places until both are the same temperature. Heat moves in three different ways; conduction, convection, and radiation. Conduction is when heat moves between objects that touch. Convection is heat movement through a liquid or a gas. Radiation is the transfer of heat without matter to carry it. Heat simply leaves one object and goes directly to another. Suppose you're standing near a campfire. You can feel the heat from the fire because it warms the air. But you can also feel the heat because it warms you directly through radiation. The test will be on this Friday.
