Week of September 17th

Image result for jaguars win

Hi Everyone,

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. The highlight for me was that wonderful Jaguar win against the Patriots on Sunday!!!

This week in math we will work on our measurement unit. We will study units for metric length (meter), capacity (liter) and mass (gram). On Thursday we will learn about metric conversions. Students already have a reference sheet in the front of their math journals that they can use for their work. Our work will mostly consist of converting from larger to smaller units. So for example a student may be asked:
If Jason walked 5 kilometers how many meters did he walk?

If my house is 10 meters high how many centimeters tall is my house?
In class we have discussed using our reference sheets to make conversions and using the sentence King Henry Doesn't Usually Drink Chocolate Milk. For each place you move to the right is ten times the unit to its left.

Students should be completing at least 15 minutes of i-Ready. The lessons that students receive from i-Ready matches the level that they earned on the diagnostic. Students will be bringing home a copy of their results soon.

This week in science we will begin our unit on matter. We will review matter and it's properties. Matter is identified based on the objects properties. Properties of matter include: color, shape, size, phase, odor, texture, volume, and attraction to magnets.

This week in social studies we will work on map skills and latitude and longitude. This is what I thought we were going to work on last week. I was so excited I forgot all about lesson 4 in chapter 1. This week in social studies we will study map skills. Students will learn the different parts of a map and we will talk about different types of maps. We will learn how to use a map scale to calculate approximate distances on a map. Students will also learn about latitude and longitude, the equator and the prime meridian. Students won't just learn about lines of latitude and longitude they will also learn how to locate places on a map using latitude and longitude coordinates.
Here are some games to play
