Week of September 23, 2019

Happy Monday Everyone,

I would like to thank everyone for the wonderful and thoughtful birthday wishes and gifts.

We will have our second early release this Wednesday. Students will be dismissed from school at 1:10. Don't forget we will also have our Wellness Wednesday lesson.
On 9/29/15, the USDOE officially recognized JBE as one of only 335 schools across the nation that year to receive the coveted National Blue Ribbon School Award for exemplary academic excellence. Because of this, the Jacksonville Beach Mayor, Mr. Charlie Latham, proclaimed September 29th, as Jacksonville Beach Elementary School Day! All faculty/staff members and students are asked to wear a Jax Beach shirt this Friday, 9/27/19, to show their school pride and celebrate this tremendous achievement!
We will have our first ticket cash in this Friday. Depending on the number of tickets that students have saved, students will be able to purchase a reward.
Please make sure students have their tickets with them on Friday.

The students did really well on the math test last week. The average score in both classes was 89%. Students will bring home their tests on Tuesday.
We have begun our work on Module 2. In this Module students will work on our measurement standards.
MAFS.4.MD.1.1 Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit.
During this unit we will learn about the metric and customary systems of measurements. Students are expected to know what units would be the appropriate choice in given situations. For example would you use grams or kilograms to measure the mass of a strawberry? Would you use millimeters, centimeters, meters or kilometers to measure the length of a hallway?
Students will also learn to convert units. In fourth grade students will only have to convert in system at a time and larger units to smaller units. Students will not have to learn how to convert metric units to customary units.
Last week we learned about metric units for length. This week we will learn about metric units for mass and capacity. Students will have a quiz on metric units on this Thursday. We will then begin customary units.
Students did even better on their science tests last week!! The average score for both classes was 90%. Our new unit will focus on matter. This week we will learn about properties of matter. The properties of matter are those characteristics that help us to identify different types of matter. Things like color, shape, texture, hardness, state of matter, mass, volume, and attraction to magnets are all properties that helps us to identify one type of matter from another.

I have been receiving a lot of questions about i-Ready completion so I thought I would send one email instead of answering each one individually.

*i-Ready Weeks- the week runs from Friday afternoon until Friday mornings. Students may complete their i-Ready during the weekend.
*Teacher Checks-When I check i-Ready minutes I can customize the view. I always set it beginning the Friday of the previous week as the beginning day and Friday of the current week for the ending day.
*Grades-Grades for i-Ready are calculated with the following scale:
45 minutes-100%
40-44 minutes-90%
30-39 minutes-80%
20-29 minutes-70%
10-19 minutes-60%
10-0 minutes 0%
The grade is entered as a homework grade for that week.

This week in Genius Hour students will begin researching their projects. On Friday your child can show their Word document with the websites and pictures they have collected so far.

Have a GREAT Week!!

We will take our test on Module 1 on this Wednesday. Students began working on their study guide today in class and should finish it tonight (Monday) for homework.
After we complete Module 1 we will begin our work in Module 2. In Module 2 we will begin our work on measurement. Students will learn about the metric and customary systems. We will learn about the Metric System first. Students will learn about units for length (kilometer, meter, centimeter, and millimeter), mass (kilogram and gram), and capacity (liter and milliliter). Students will learn how to convert larger units to smaller units. Students will learn that the Metric System is a decimal based system that moves in units of 10 times greater than the unit to the right.

This week in science we will discuss different types of models. We will wrap up this unit with our test on Friday. Next week we will move into Unit 5, Matter.
Students have learned how to use a search engine to research their topic. Last week we began learning how to save web addresses in Word document. This word document will eventually turn into a source page for the final project.

Week of September 9, 2019

Happy Monday Everyone,

We will try once again to get back into the swing of things after our extended time of due to Hurricane Dorian. I hope everyone made it through with no damage. We have not had any word yet as to whether or not we will have to use weather days to make up the three days that we missed. There has been a date change for when 1st quarter progress reports will be sent home.

I would like to thank everyone that was able to make it to Open House. I sent a copy of the power point presentation that Ms. Billiard and I used at that night. If you have any questions please let us know.

This week in math we will begin working on using the standard algorithm to solve subtraction problems. Students could expect to see problems with multi-digit numbers through the millions place. Students will have problems where they will have to regroup (called borrowing in our school days). We will also continue to have multi-step problems. Students will begin to see problems where one step might be addition and one might be subtraction. Students need to make sure they carefully read the problems to determine what steps need to be taken.
We will finish up module 1 this week. Our module 1 test is tentatively being planned for next Tuesday 9/17.

This week in science, we finish up unit 1. This week we will take a closer look some typical tools that scientist use to complete their jobs. We will also take a look at different types of science models; 2-D models, 3-D models, computer models, and mental models. Our test on unit 1 is tentatively being planned for Thursday 9/19.

Last week students got back their proposed topics and questions. Students were graded on whether or not their topic was science related, if they had at least 4 questions, if commonly known words were spelled correctly, and if their sentences had capital letters and punctuation marks. The grades were entered into FOCUS. If your child does not have a grade they were given back their proposal to make corrections. Those students need to turn in their work to Mrs. Chin by Wednesday 9/11.
