Happy Spring Everyone,
I hope everyone had a wonderful, fun, and restful Spring Break. In just a few short months we will be at the end of this school year.
In preparation for 5th Grade, Late work will not be accepted this quarter. All homework is due at the end of the week in which is was assigned. This applies to both paper pencil and digital homework assignments.
The Best Part of Me As part of our social emotional unit, students will be writing a poem about the best part of themselves. I am also asking you to write a poem about the best part of your child. I am hoping that through this activity students will develop positive perspectives about themselves.
Your child will be brought home a letter with the directions and an example poem that I wrote about my niece, and an envelope before spring break. Once you have completed your poem place it in the envelope and seal it. Please do not share your poem with child. I would like for them to read it for the first time in class.
Due to the demands of testing, I was unable to have students begin their poems. We will begin working on them this week. Please try to have your poem turned in by Friday April 1st.

This week in math, we will begin working on Module 6. In this module we will learn about decimal place value, decimal notation, how fractions and decimals are related, comparing fractions. Students will also learn how decimals are used in relation to measurement, 30.5 centimeters and money, one penny is 0.01 one one hundredth of a dollar.
This week our work will work will focus on how fractions and decimals are related and decimal notation. In 4th grade our standards only call for students to work with decimals in tenths and hundredths places.

This week in science, we will begin Unit 3 Earth's Place in Space. In this unit we will study standards to help students understand:
* the differences between rotation and revolution
* why stars appear to move across the sky* why the observable shape of the moon appears to change
* the effect the space industry has had on our lives and the economy of Florida
This week we will focus on rotation and revolution. The Earth rotates or spins on its axis once every 24 hours. Earth also revolves once around the sun every 365 days. The movements of Earth is connected to why stars including the sun appear to move across the sky. The stars are stationary and we are the ones moving. We see the sun during daytime because of Earth's rotation. We see different constellations at different times of the year because of Earth's revolution around the sun.
This week students will also begin a month long project tied to our standard on the observable changes in the shape of the moon. Students will be given a moon calendar. They need to neatly color in the moon to show the parts of the moon that we can see. This project will be due on April 22nd. Students work will be graded on accuracy, neatness, and being turned in on time.
