Week of September 26th

Happy Monday Everyone,

I would like to say a huge Thank You to everyone for all of the birthday wishes, treats and gifts. I am very overwhelmed by your thoughtfulness.
As we all know our kids are going to get sick from time to time. And sometimes when they are healing they are well enough to come back to school, but still require medication. Duval County Public Schools has a very strict policy when it comes to medication at school. We are not allowed to dispense medicine at school unless a medication form has been filled out and signed by both a doctor and the parent. This includes both prescription and over the counter (cough drops, aspirin, etc.) medications. The form was included in the back to school packet and most doctors have them at their offices. Below is a copy of the medication guidelines that we follow in DCPS.

We have a working snack time ever day when we get back from our resource classes. Some students that don't have a snack are saying that they are hungry. Please help your child remember to back a snack each day for when they get hungry. If it is hard for them to remember they can keep packs of granola bars, chips, etc. in their cubbies so they can grab it at snack time.

The STEM Showcase is this Thursday night!! Please join us for lots of fun STEM activities. Students that come will earn extra credit for their science grade. I hope everyone can attend.
Two of our activities need some materials that you may have on hand at home. We need water bottles with the lids and empty paper towel rolls. If you have any please send them in to me or to Mrs. Lomblo.

Thank you to everyone that gave to our STEM September fundraiser. JBE has once again knocked it out of the park.!! The fundraiser will run until the end of this week. Please go to https://stem-september.cheddarup.com to make a donation.
Ticket Cash In

Students have been earning tickets since we started school. We will have our first Ticket Cash in on this Wednesday. Students can use their tickets to purchase items listed below or save them until the next cash in day. We will have cash in on the last Friday, every other month. If students purchase Electronics they may bring in an electronic device to play games during recess on Friday. The game must be appropriate for school. The game must also be downloaded to the device because students are not allowed to log personal devices on the DCPS network..

This week in science, we will continue our study of matter. This week we will learn how the molecules in water behaves in each state. Most students are familiar with the states of matter, solid, liquid, and gas. This year we will take a more focus look at the molecules. We will also discuss freezing (when heat energy is removed particles in matter slow down until they can no longer move freely), melting (adding heat causes particles to speed up), evaporation (when heat is added the particles speed up so much they become water vapor), and condensation (when heat energy is removed from a gas, the particles slow down enough that they change from a gas to a liquid).

We will also study the physical property of magnetism. A magnet is an object that attracts iron. We will learn about magnetic fields and magnetic poles.

This week in math, we will begin working on unit 4 in our math book. In this unit we will study multiplication as a comparison. In this unit, Multiplication as Comparison, your child will learn how to solve comparison word problems using addition, division, and multiplication. Your child will also learn how to write statements and equations to compare two or more quantities.
What math terms will your child use?
Students will learn two new terms in this unit:
additive comparison a comparison of two numbers in which one number is described as being more than the other number; for example: 12 is 3 more than 9
multiplicative comparison a comparison of two numbers in which one number is described as a multiple of the other number; for example: 20 is 2 times as many as 10
In this unit students will learn:
Solving a Comparison Word Problem Using Addition
Your child will solve comparison word problems using addition. Your child will learn to use an addition equation to represent a comparison given in a word problem.
Example Chan drives 10 miles. Edwin drives 8 more miles than Chan. How many miles does Edwin drive?
10 + 8 = Edwin’s miles      10 + 8 = 18      Edwin drives 18 miles.
Solving Comparison Problems Using Multiplication
Your child will write multiplicative comparison statements and multiplication equations to describe comparisons. Your child will learn that a multiplicative comparison statement has the form:
________ is ________ times as many as ________.
Solve Comparison Problems Using Division
Your child will write division equations to represent multiplicative comparisons. Your child will learn to draw a bar diagram and write a division equation to solve comparisons.

This week in science we will continue our work with matter. This week we will focus on the Law of Conservation of Matter. This scientific law, simply stated the law says that the mass of the whole is equal to the sum of the masses of each individual piece. We will explore this using pan balances and snap cubes.

Monday: Math: Freckle Facts Practice and NSO.1.3 Compare and Order Numbers
Science: Unit 5 Lesson 3 What is conservation of mass?

Tuesday: Science: Complete pages 243-246 in regular science textbook.

Please join us this week for Open House. Open House is this Thursday night at 5:30. We will meet in either room 207 or 208. We will send an email later in the week to let you know the details. We will discuss more information about our upcoming year together.

For the second year in a row JBE will be learning about the cultures of our families. Each month a different culture will be studied. We would like to include our families in our studies. Please look over the list below and let Mrs. Lomblo and I know if you are interested in coming to speak to the class about your families' cultural heritage. The list below includes information about the culture being celebrated, the month of the observance, and the date that we would like our volunteers to come in to present. If the date for a particular month doesn't work for your schedule, just let us know and arrangements can be made for you to come in on another day.

September -Hispanic-Latino Heritage--September 28th
October--Italian American Heritage--October 26th
November--Native American Heritage--November 30th

February--African American Heritage--February 22nd
March--Irish American--March 29th

I have been selected to participate in a new Duval County Schools initiative named U.L.T.R.A. This program is a grant to study how students learn science with and without additional technology. There will be two groups. One group will receive access to a computer cart and the other will teach science as they normally would. I have not yet been which group I'll be in, but I'm hoping to be in the computer cart group. I will be sending home a letter from the district that gives more information. If you Do Not want your child to participate in the program simply sign the form and return it to me. Your child will still receive high quality science instruction here at school there data will just not be included in the study. The only information that will be included in the study is assessment scores. No personal information about your child will be used.

In addition to email, I also use a program called Class Tag. I use Class Tag as an additional communication tool. It is a private program that only members of our class family can access. I post announcements, pictures of classroom activities, and reminders. Class Tag has a two way communication feature. I can post things to the entire class and also send individual messages. You can also send messages to me. You can access Class Tag on the web or by downloading the app to your phone.

It is time for this year's Invention Convention competition. Students may enter either individual or group projects. If they enter a group project, the project must be done with another 4th grader. Please see the flyer below for more information and due dates. Students that enter a project will receive extra credit on in science.

This week in math, we will begin working on unit 3 in math. In this unit we will begin with reviewing basic multiplication facts. In fourth grade students must be able to recall basic multiplication facts through 12 x 12 and related division facts with automaticity. We will work on multiplication as a comparison. We will end the unit learning about balanced equations. Students will be given two equations with an equal sign between them. They will have to decide if two equations are in fact equal to each other. Students will also begin learning how to solve for variables in equations.
Multiplication as a Comparison

This equation is true because 6+6=12 and 15-3=12

For the equation to be true, x = 2

This week in science we will complete unit 1. Students will take their test on Friday, September 9th. To study for the test we will complete a study guide in class. Students should also reread the material in their books. If students prefer not to carry their books home, they can access the science textbook online through Blended Learning. They simply log in to One View and click on Blended Learning. Once in Blended Learning they should scroll down to find Florida Science.
