Week of 11/14/2022

 

Happy Monday Everyone,

     I hope everyone made it through Nicole without too much damage. We are going to try our St. Augustine field trip again this Wednesday. We will be going on our field trip to St. Augustine on this Wednesday. Please have your child wear their class shirt. If your child does not have a class shirt any JBE shirt will work or a shirt that is the same color as their classes shirt (Johnson-Green, Lomblo-Blue). Your child should also wear comfortable shoes. They may also want to bring a light jacket or sweater. We will be outside for most of the day so if your child burns easily you may want to apply sunscreen before they leave for school. With parental permission students may also bring a camera or phone to take pictures. 

     Students will need a bag lunch with a drink. Please pack their lunch in a paper, plastic, or Ziplock bag with their name written on the outside of the bag. Students will not need money, because we will not be visiting any gift shops. 

     If you are chaperoning, please remember that due to space on the busses parents must provide their own transportation. You may follow the busses from school or meet us at the Visitor Center. We are scheduled to board the trolley at 10:30. Please meet at the Visitor Center at 10:15.

Students Return to School

    This week in math, we will continue our work on division. Students will see problems with 2, 3, or 4-digit dividends and 1-digit divisors. For this standard students are allowed to choose the division strategy that work best for them to solve problems. Students do need to be familiar with all strategies for problems that are solved in a specific way. I have also encouraged students to use multiplication as a way to check their work. 

     This week we will begin to work with remainders in division problems. In fourth grade students will have to show remainders in the form of a fraction. Your child will learn how to find and interpret remainders and represent remainders as fractional parts of the divisor. When splitting objects into equal groups, a remainder indicates that there are objects left over. A remainder can be interpreted in different ways based on the context of the problem. Sometimes a remainder means that another group is necessary. For example, if packing 51 objects into boxes that hold 6 items each, 9 boxes are required. The division problem is 51 ÷ 6 = 8 remainder 3, or 8 3/6  . So, 8 boxes will be full and one box will have 3 items.

     

     This week in science, we will learn how we use the energy of moving wind and water to move things. We will discuss that even though we often hear people say things like "wind energy" or "water energy", that wind and water are not forms of energy. Instead the kinetic energy that moving wind and water have can be transferred into other forms of energy.

     We will also begin discussing heat energy. Heat (thermal) energy is the energy that moves between objects of different temperatures. Heat moves from warmer objects/places to cooler objects/places until both are the same temperature. Heat moves in three different ways; conduction, convection, and radiation. Conduction is when heat moves between objects that touch. Convection is heat movement through a liquid or a gas. Radiation is the transfer of heat without matter to carry it. Heat simply leaves one object and goes directly to another. Suppose you're standing near a campfire. You can feel the heat from the fire because it warms the air. But you can also feel the heat because it warms you directly through radiation.
