Week of March 27, 2023

Happy Monday Everyone,

We will be going on our field trip to the Jacksonville Zoo on this Friday. Students will need to bring a bag lunch with a drink. Students will be receiving a drawstring backpack. Please pack their lunch in the backpack on Friday. Instead of the class coming back together to eat lunch in a large group, they will eat lunch with their field trip group when they get ready at any of the many picnic tables located through out the zoo.
Students are asked to wear their class shirt (Johnson-green/ Lomblo-blue) and comfortable walking shoes. Students will not need any money since we will not be visiting the gift shop. Students may also wear hats and sunglasses and you may want to apply sunscreen since we will be outside for most of the day. Students may also bring a phone or camera to take pictures.
We are planning to leave at 9:15 and return to campus by 1:30. If you are chaperoning for this field trip please make sure that you have informed your child's homeroom teacher. We have to check that your volunteer status is up to date. Chaperones can follow us from the school or plan to meet us at the zoo. If you are using your zoo membership, show it at the gate upon your arrival and wait for us just inside the gate. If you are paying your admission through the school cash website, please wait for us at the front entrance.

This week in math we will complete the first half of unit 14. So far in this unit students have learned about perimeter and area. They have solved real world problems involving perimeter and area. They have solved problems where a dimension is missing and have had to use a the other information to find the missing dimension. Students have solved problems when multiple rectangles have to be created with different areas and same perimeters and problems with same areas and different perimeters. Students will take a quiz on Tuesday of this week.
Students will take the districts PMA test for math on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. This test will cover all of the 4th grade math standards. The only standards we have left are the rest of our geometry standards and measurement standards. We will use the information from this test to help students in our final push towards the state's FAST Test which will be given in May. Encourage your child to take their time on this test and to use their scratch paper.
We will participate in the Superintendent's Math Challenge from March 27 - April 28. Students will be eligible for prizes for simply doing math. The beauty of this program is that it will go along with our work on Freckle!! Students simply need to complete the assignments that I assign in Freckle. That's it!! The more you participate the greater your chances of winning.

This week in science, we complete our work on unit 3. Students will take their test on Wednesday. If testing and early dismissal do not allow for enough time to take the science test on Wednesday, it will be on Thursday.

This week in science, we will continue our study of the moon. This week we will begin learning about moon phases. Students are bringing home a blank calendar. Over the course of the next month students are to record the moon phases. For this project students need to neatly shade in each circle to match the current phase of the moon. Students can use a gray crayon or their pencil. Since the time of the moon rise varies depending on the phase students can copy our classroom moon calendar or use this website, https://stardate.org/nightsky/moon Make sure to set the calendar to March 2023.

Students also learned to determine the median, mode, and range of data sets. Students will take a quiz on unit 13 on this Thursday.

This week in science, we will complete our study of rotation and revolution of Earth. Students have learned that Earth rotates once on it's axis once every 24 hours. Earth's rotation causes the sun to appear to move across the sky during the day and the stars to appear to move across the night sky. Students have also learned that due to Earth's revolution around the sun we see different constellations at different times of the year. Students will take a quiz on these concepts this week.
