Happy Monday Everyone,

     We have a very busy week this week!! Please see the calendar below to see all of the fun activities going on at JBE this week.

     I would like to again thank everyone for participating in our Treasure Trot fundraising efforts. JBE's awesome families have helped our school meet our school wide goal!! Congratulations to my homeroom for being in first place!! As of this morning we have raised $6,373!! Thank you so much for participating this money will help PTO make JBE an even greater place to be!!

*Students should wear their class shirt or a JBE shirt. Our class shirts are green. 

*Students will want to bring a jacket/sweatshirt or wear a long sleeved shirt under their t-shirt. We will be outside for the entire day and the temperature will be chilly in the morning.

*Students should wear comfortable walking shoes. No flip flops.

*Students will not need money.

*Students may bring a camera. If students are bringing a cell phone as their camera, they may only use the camera function of the phone during the field trip. 

*Students will receive a grade for their work during the field trip. This counts as a hands on lab experience.

Week of 3/11-3/15

Spring Break

     This week in math, we will finish our work with Module 5. The test is on Tuesday. For the remainder of the week we will work on an end of unit performance task, Fly Our Fractions Kite. Students will use different colors on a grid of 56 squares. After coloring the squares students will figure out the fraction of each color used. Students will be asked to simplify fractions where possible. When we return from Spring Break we will begin our work with decimals. 

     During spring break have your child notice when they use math. When we return we will make a chart, Math Never Takes a Break; How We Used Math During Spring Break. This will help reinforce real world connections between what we learn at school and everyday life. 

     This week in science, we will begin looking at the different types of rocks. Students have been assigned two Brain Pop movies, Types of Rocks and The Rock Cycle. The assignment is under the title Rocks Assignment under the Assignment tabs.

     This week in social studies, we will study the history of St. Augustine. During our field trip we will take a guided trolley tour of the city of St. Augustine. On the tour we will see the Spanish and British influences on the cities architecture. We will visit Lincolnville, another historic section of the city. Lincolnville is designated a historic place because of its connection to the Civil Rights movement. We will also learn about Henry Flagler. He is responsible for helping to make the city and the state of Florida a tourist destination. After the trolley tour we will take a tour of the fort, Castillo de San Marcos. We will eat lunch at the Visitor Center after touring the fort. After lunch students will work in groups to complete an activity about the fort.

Happy Monday Everyone,

     We will have a pretty normal week by JBE standards. Five full days, no early release, and no assemblies. Keep getting those donations for the Treasure Trot. Currently my homeroom has raised 91.8% of our class goal and Ms. Billiards class has raised 28.6% toward their goal. We will be taking donations until next week. JBE gets to keep 100% of all the money we raise so please consider making a donations.

As I know of any changes I will let you know.

     This week in math we will complete our work with subtracting mixed numbers using various strategies. Students have learned how to use visual models (number lines, tape diagrams, and rectangles), changing the mixed numbers to improper fractions then subtracting, and decomposing the minuend using number bonds. For the rest of the week we will review multiplying whole numbers by fractions. We will apply that knowledge to multiplying whole numbers by mixed numbers using the associative property and the distributive property.

      Students will have a timed quiz on this Friday. We are tentatively planning our fraction test for Thursday March 6th. Once we finish our fraction unit we will move right into decimals. 

     This week in science we will begin learning about the properties used to identify minerals. Minerals are identified using:

*Color-Not the most reliable because many minerals are the same color.

*Hardness-The Mohs scale is used to classify minerals using hardness. Only minerals higher on the scale can scratch minerals lower on the scale. 

*Streak-When minerals are rubbed across a tile plate they will leave a color behind. Many minerals leave a different streak color than the color they come in. For example pyrite has a gold metallic color but it's streak is black.

*Cleavage/Fracture-This property describes how a mineral breaks. Some minerals break along smooth lines and others break in jagged pieces.

*Luster-This property describes how a mineral reflects light. Words like metallic, nonmetallic, milky, pearly, and vitreous are used to describe luster.

     We are preparing for our field trip to St. Augustine. Our field trip is next Friday March 8th. We will visit the Castillo de San Marcos and take a trolley tour of the city. This week for homework students should complete the Chapter 6 Lesson 1 sheet and turn it in on Friday.

This week in math we will continue our work with fractions. Students will compare mixed numbers that are larger than 2 using various strategies. In addition to using strategies that students have already learned, (comparing to benchmarks, same numerator, same denominator, common multiples), students will learn how to cross multiply as a useful strategy. 

We will also work with line plots. Students were exposed to line plots in 3rd grade. In 3rd grade students primarily worked with whole numbers. In 4th grade students will be given fraction and mixed number data points. Students are expected to construct line plots, analysis the data on a line plot, and and answer questions about that data. 

For the line plot above students may be asked:

*How many total inches of snow fell during December?

*What is the difference between the greatest number of inches of snow and the least number of inches of snow for December?

     This week in science we will discuss erosion as a process that changes the structure of the earth's surface. Students are expected to know the difference between the weathering and erosion. 

     This week in social studies students have two sheets to complete. One sheet is on chapter 5 lesson 4 which deals with Florida entering the Union and becoming a state. The second sheet covers all of the lessons in chapter 5. The top of the sheet is fill in the blank (spelling will count) and the bottom is multiple choice. Students should return both sheets to on Friday.

     We have our JBE Family Science Night on Tuesday night from 6:00-8:00. There will be many exciting science activities facilitated by JBE's Fabulous Teachers form 6-7:30. At 7:30 there will be another performance from our great presenter that did Monday mornings assembly. I am offering extra credit in science for anyone that attends. I hope to see you there!!
     On Thursday we will exchange Valentines to our classmates and friends. I am in need of a parent volunteer from my homeroom to send in either valentine cookies or cupcakes on Thursday.

     This week in math we will continue adding and subtracting fractions from whole numbers. This week the whole numbers will be greater than 1.

 

     This week in science we will take our test on Unit 9, Motion. Students should bring home their books, journals, and study guides on Tuesday to prepare for the test. For this test we are allowing students to use their books and journals to during the test. After this unit we will begin a study of Earths Materials and Resources. In this unit we will study; weathering, erosion, properties of minerals, types of rocks, and renewable and nonrenewable resources. 

     

     Due to the short week we will not work on social studies this week. 

     This week in technology students need to complete 45 minutes of i-ready. I will not check it until Friday to allow everyone a chance to get it done. Students also need to respond on the team space to the conversation on team names for the upcoming Treasure Trot.

     This week in math we will begin adding and subtracting fractions. We will begin with adding and subtracting fractions we will gradually move into adding and subtracting from whole numbers and mixed numbers. Students will also learn how to show both operations on a number line. 

   

     This week in science we will finish up our work on motion. We will complete several hands on activities to help students understand motion. Students will take a quiz on unit 9 lessons 1 and 2 on Friday. Our test is tentatively planned for next Wednesday 2/13. 

     The other 4th grade teachers and myself have become very frustrated with the lack of information in the science book. We are finding that the information provides only surface understanding for our students. We want them to be able to take information and apply it to real world situations. And we are finding that impossible given the way we currently approach science. 

     Starting with this unit students will be receiving additional materials that we will be secured in their science journals. We will refer to both our text books and the extra materials when working in science. We also no longer complete a day of social studies in class. Beginning now through the end of the year I give students a social studies assignment (quiz sheet, vocabulary, or Brain Pop) at the beginning of the week. The assignment will be due on Friday of that week.

     I am hopeful that with the renewed focus on science will provide students with more time to interact with the materials which will lead to deeper understanding and better grades on the end of unit assessments.

     Please consider coming to Family Science Night next Tuesday from 6:00-8:00. I will give extra credit in science for anyone that attends and participates. Students that attend will also receive 10 tickets. 

     This week in social studies we will work on chapter 5 lesson 3. This lesson picks up at the end of First Seminole War. The United States Army took Pensacola from Spain. Since Spain was not as strong as it once was, it decided to give all of it's Florida lands to the United States. As soon as the treaty was signed Florida became a territory. Being a territory meant that the U.S. government would give money to Florida's territory government and provide military protections. Soon after becoming a territory the settlers wanted the government to remove the Seminoles from their lands near and around present day Tallahassee. 

      Students homework assignment this week is to complete the quiz and numbers 1-5 for chapter 5 vocabulary. Both assignments are due on Friday.

JBE Family Science Night

     This week in math we will continue our work on fractions. This week our focus will be on comparing fractions. Students will do this by using landmarks, mathematical reasoning, and with fraction equivalence. At the end of the week we will begin working on adding and subtracting fractions. Students will take timed quizzes on Friday.

     This week we will study. Students will learn the meanings of  motion, velocity, acceleration and how to calculate speed. Did you know that acceleration is more than speeding up. Acceleration is speeding up, slowing down or changing direction. 

  

     We will not have a lesson for social studies this week due to the Literacy Week Character parade. Students do have a sheet that needs to be completed for homework. The sheet is due by Friday. 

Growth Mindset

     For our Growth Mindset we are continuing to learn how to set goals for ourselves. Right now students are setting goals for the 3rd quarter. Once students have set their goal we will discuss making a plan to make sure our goals are successful.

JBE Family Science Night

     This week in math we will begin looking at strategies for comparing fractions. We will begin by comparing fractions to landmarks. Students will decide if a fraction is less than half, equal to half, between half and 1 whole, equal to 1 whole, or greater than one whole. From there we will begin to explore more mathematical ways to compare fractions using multiplication and division to give fractions withe unlike denominators the same denominator by finding equivalent fractions. Students will use the greater than >, less than <, and equal to = symbols to compare. Students will also begin to place fractions with different denominators on number lines. 

     This week in science, we will finish up our study of heat energy. We will then move into force and motion. In this study we will look learn about motion, position, speed, velocity, and acceleration. Students will learn how speed is calculated (Speed=Distance/Time). We will also learn about the forces that causes motion. This is a short unit. It has two lessons one giving information and one hands on lab. We are planning to take the test within the next two weeks. 

     This week in Social Studies we will read and discuss Chapter 5 Lesson 2, The Seminole. We will read how they originally came to Florida from Georgia and Alabama to avoid additional conflicts with the Colonists. We will discuss the causes of the 1st Seminole War and learn about Andrew Jackson's connection to Florida and Jacksonville. There are Brain Pop movies on the Seminole Wars and Andrew Jackson.
