     Students have begun presenting their Genius Hour projects. We will continue with presentations every Tuesday until everyone has had a turn. You can help your child prepare by letting them present their project to you. Be an audience for them. Ask them questions about their topic. And give them overall freed back on the information in their presentation as well as how the did as a presenter.  

     This week in math we will spend time reviewing more standards in preparation for the FSA. 

     This week in science we will learn about the life cycles of animals. Students will learn about complete metamorphosis and incomplete metamorphosis. 

     This week in science students have a one sheet to complete and return on Friday.

     This week in math we will begin our review work for the FSA. This week we will focus on measurement conversions. This will include customary and metric units, units of time. We will also review area and perimeter. I have set up some measurement review on Prodigy. Students can go to www.prodigygame.com/play. I have also issued a challenge to students, if they can show or tell me their Prodigy username and password they will earn 10 tickets. 

     

     Be on the look out for your child's FSA practice test to come home this week. The practice test is a shortened version of the FSA. Students can expect to see similar problems on the FSA. Please review the test with your child and discuss the problems that they missed. We checked and reviewed the entire test in class so they should be able to tell you about their mistakes and the correct way to solve the problem. Some common mistakes that I am seeing are:

*multiplication fact errors

*failing to complete both parts of multi-step problems

*failing to show work and making mental errors by solving problems in our head

     This week in science we will begin our next unit on plants and animals. Our first standard is knowing how plants reproduce. Students will learn that plants have both male and female parts. Flowering plants and conifers must be pollinated before they can make seeds. We will also discuss how and why plants disperse their seeds. 

     Students have one sheet to complete this week. Sheets are always due on Fridays.

     This week in science we will finish up our unit on space. Students will take their test on Thursday. Our next unit will be on plants and animals. 

     For the rest of year our social studies assignments will skip around. We wanted to make sure that we covered important events like World War 1, World War 2, Civil Rights and the Great Depression. So we will only have sheets that correspond to those lessons. Students should make sure they look at the top right hand corner of the sheet to see which chapter and lesson they should turn to in their books.

     I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. With the weather getting nicer and nicer it is getting more and more difficult to focus on school. However we must stay focused so that we can finish just as strongly as we started. 

     I would like to thank everyone that volunteered for our field trip to the zoo. We had a wonderful day thanks in part to you.

     This week in math we will complete our decimal unit. Students will learn how to add and subtract decimals, learn how coins represent fractional parts of a dollar, and solve word problems by applying their knowledge of decimals. We will take our test next week. 

       This week in science we will learn about the phases of moon. Students will learn what causes the appearance of moon to change. Students will also learn the order and names of the moon phases. 

     This week in social studies, students will complete chapter 7. Students have two sheets to complete this week for homework.

Happy Monday Everyone, 

     I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. Please remember that we will take our Writing FSA on tomorrow, Tuesday April 2nd. Students should get to be at a good time tonight and eat a healthy filling breakfast tomorrow morning, because will not have snack until after testing is complete. Students have completed many writing prompts with Ms. Billiard and are ready for the test. If your child is feeling anxious acknowledge their feelings. Discuss with them the steps to writing an essay and remind them that tomorrow will be no different than any other day of writing. Discuss having a Growth Mindset, that this is another way for their brains to learn and grow. Everyone gets nervous before tests, help them channel that nervousness with some deep breathing. Maybe adopt a mantra like, "I am ready. I am prepared".

     We will be going to the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens on this Thursday. We are asking students to wear their class shirts or a JBE shirt. Students also need to wear comfortable walking shoes. They may want to bring a light jacket or sweatshirt too. 

     Students may bring a camera and water bottle. Students may want to bring a small light backpack to help them carry their belongings. Students will not visit the gift shop, ride the train or the carousel. Students will be allowed to feed the animals. The zoo charges the following prices:

Stingray Feeding $2.00

Giraffe Feeding  $2.00

Lorikeet Feeding $1.00

     This week in math we will work on ordering decimals. We will also work on using the four operations to solve word problems involving decimals. This will include problems involving intervals of time, money, and distances. 

     This week in science we will begin our next unit, space. This week will learn about Earth's movements (rotation and revolution). We will also learn why the sun and other stars appear to move across the nights sky. Did you know people in the northern hemisphere see completely different constellations? This is because Earth is in the way. 

     In this unit we will also learn why the moon appears to be different shapes. Students are beginning a new project today. Students will keep track of the moon's appearance for 1 month. Students were given a calendar in class today. Their completed calendar is due on Friday May 3rd. Since the moon is not always visible students are encouraged to use https://stardate.org/ to help keep track of the moons appearance. Students may also come in to the classroom before school to copy my calendar. 

     This week in social studies students will read chapter 7 lesson 2, Florida's Agriculture. In this lesson students will read about the importance of citrus industry for our state. Students will also learn about the timber and cattle industries in our state. Students have one sheet to complete for homework this week.

     Our field trip to the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens will be Thursday April 4th. We are planning to leave school at 8:45ish and return by 2:00. The price for students is $10. If you are planning to chaperone, please carefully read the information below regarding parent pricing.

Adult Costs
Bus	Parents must provide their own transportation.

Admission	$15.95 If paid to JBE $19.95 at the gate

*All money is due no later than Thursday March 28^th.

     This week in math, we will continue our work with decimals. Students will learn about the equivalence between tenths and hundredths. For example 0.1=0.10  0.5=0.50. Students will also learn how to represent decimal numbers using models (number lines, area models, tape diagrams, and with numeral disks). At the end of the week we will learn a variety of strategies for comparing decimals. Students will take a quiz on Friday.

     

     This week in science we will complete our work on unit 4. Unit 4 included work on weathering and erosion, minerals, different types of rocks and Florida's natural resources. Students will take their test on Friday this week. We will then move into our space unit. 

     This week in social studies, students will begin work in chapter 7. In lesson 1, Railroads and Tourism, students will learn how the invention of the railroad led to Florida's booming tourism industry. Students will also learn more about Henry Flagler. Students have a sheet to complete for this lesson. The sheet is due on Friday.

     I would like to thank all of our fabulous parent volunteers that chaperoned our field trip to St. Augustine. Thanks so much. Mark your calendars for April 4th. That is the date of our next field trip. We will have a hands on learning lab at the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens. We have unlimited chaperones for this trip. Field Trip--Jacksonville Zoo

     This week in math we will begin our new module on decimals. This week we will learn about decimal place value. We will learn that decimals are just like fractions because they represent parts of a whole. Unlike fractions, decimals only use powers of 10. For example decimals come in parts of tenths, hundredths and so on. We will also discuss how decimals and the metric system are related. In 4th grade students are only required to work with tenths and hundredths. 

     This week in science we will finish our work with types of rocks and the rock cycle. We will then move into the natural resources of Florida. Students will learn about renewable resources (quickly replaced in nature) and non-renewable resources (not easily or quickly replaced in nature). We will also learn about ways to take care of our planet and resources. Did you know that there are now 4-R's when it comes to conservation? Reduce (cut down your use of natural resources), Reuse (reuse items whenever possible), Recycle (recycle all acceptable materials), and now we try to follow Refuse (refuse to take single use items-plastic bags, straws and buy products from companies that use recycled materials in their products.

     This week in social studies, students have two sheets to complete for chapter 6. One sheet is on chapter 6 lesson 3. This lesson discusses the Reconstruction Era that occurred after the end of the Civil War. After the war ended many buildings and towns had severe damages. This was the governments plan for rebuilding the South. This lesson also discusses what life was like for newly freed slaves. Students will read about how Florida's economy was able to recover after the war. 

     On the second sheet students are asked questions about all of the lessons in chapter 6. For more information about the Civil War students can watch the Civil War and Civil War Causes on Brain Pop.
