Week of 10/11/2021

Welcome to the 2nd Quarter,

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. Since students had Monday off, this will be a short week. We are now in the 2nd Quarter. This grading period ends on 12/17. We have lots of new content to cover during this nine weeks. Students will learn division strategies and how to use a protractor in math. And in science we will learn about changes in matter, review forms of energy and learn about force and motion.

If you or your child needs to message me, please send me an email to johnsona4@duvalschools.org or message me on our Class Tag site. Many students have posted questions on TEAMS. I do not check TEAMS as often as I check my email or Class Tag.

This week in math we will complete our study of multiplication strategies and move into division strategies. Students will learn how to divide using the multiplying up strategy, area model, partial quotients, and distributive properties to solve division problems (please the models below).
Partial Quotients

Students will also learn how to interpret remainders. This will apply to word problems. Sometimes the remainder is ignored, sometimes the remainder is the answer and sometimes the quotient needs to rounded up.
*Remainder is Ignored
Ms. Johnson has 21 students. She needs to make as many even groups as she can. How many even groups can she make?
*Remainder is the Answer
Ms. Johnson has 21 students. After she puts all of the students into even groups, how many students are left over?
*Quotient Needs to be Rounded Up
Ms. Johnson has 21 students going on a field trip to the zoo. The vans that will take them to the zoo hold 10 students. How many vans does Ms. Johnson need to take all of the students to the zoo.
Students will have their first timed quiz this Friday. Students will have 5 minutes to solve 50 problems. The problems will cover basic multiplication facts from 1 x 1 through 10 x 10. The scores students earn will be entered into the skills section of the math grade book.
*Facts Practice
*OA.1.1 Multiplication as a Comparison

This week in science we will begin working on Unit 6 Matter and Its Changes. In this unit we will learn the difference between physical and chemical changes in matter. Students are familiar with the chemical changes of rusting, burning and decay. Many students are not familiar with the chemical change of tarnish. Tarnish happens when metals such as silver and copper are exposed to air. A famous example is the Statue of Liberty. When France gave the statue to the United States it was a brownish color similar to the color of a penny. Over time the copper statue has turned the green color that we see today.

Week of 9/27/2021

Welcome to the First Week of Fall,

The only thing that fall means in Florida is that the humidity goes away. Thankful we now have some cool breezes during recess.
Thank you to everyone that has given to our STEM-September Fundraiser. This is the last week for donations. Please use the link below if you still want to give to this worthy cause.
PTO is going to provide an ice cream party to the class that earns the most money on each grade level. And any class that reaches 80% by September 30th will get extra recess..
Starting this week we will follow a new schedule for buying snacks in the cafeteria. This new schedule is designed to ensure that everyone gets to purchase a snack. Ms. Johnson's Homerooms day for snacks will be on Tuesday's and Mrs. Lomblo's class will get to purchase snacks on Mondays.

Students have been earning tickets since we started school. We will have our first Ticket Cash in on this Wednesday. Students can use their tickets to purchase items listed below or save them until the next cash in day. We will have cash in on the last Friday, every other month. If students purchase Electronics they may bring in an electronic device to play games during the last 30 minutes of the day on Friday afternoon. The game must be appropriate for school. The game must also be downloaded to the device because students are not allowed to log personal devices on the DCPS network..

This week in math we will be working in Module 3. Module 3 is a big unit we will work on application of the area and perimeter formulas, strategies for solving multiplication and division strategies, finding factors and multiples of numbers, and prime and composite numbers. We began working on area and perimeter on last Friday. Students will apply what they learned in 3rd grade for finding area and perimeter. This year our work will center more on figuring out missing dimensions when either the area or perimeter is known.
For example:
*The perimeter of a rectangle is 120 cm. The length is 20 cm. What is the width of the rectangle?
*A rectangle is 2 meters wide. It is 3 times as long as it is wide. What is the length of the rectangle?
We will also begin working on strategies for multiplication of multi-digit whole numbers. This week we will learn how to use the area model for multiplication and the partial products strategies.

In fourth grade we will not cover the multiplication algorithm. Students may use it as a checking strategy if they wish, but can not use it as the main form of showing work..

This week in science we will finish our work in Unit 5. This week we will learn about another physical property of matter: magnetism. Students will learn about magnetic poles, magnetic fields, and the types of materials that are attracted to magnets.

We will be working on a series of lessons designed to help our students understand the social-emotional parts of their character. Last week students made a list of their strengths. These were things both academically and socially that students felt accomplished and successful.
This week we are exploring the power of ...yet. By thinking in terms of "I am not good at that yet. Helps students embrace the challenges that they face in all situations. Please help your child adopt a power of yet thinking by not allowing them to simply say, "I can't do it". Encourage them to instead say, "I can't do it yet!" This will help them to embrace new challenges and move from a Fixed Mindset to a Growth Mindset.
We have watched the videos below in class as part of our discussion.

This week in math we will complete our study of the metric system. Students will take their test on Tuesday. On Wednesday we will begin Module 3. In this unit we will study several concepts. We will learn how to model multiplication problems, area and perimeter, prime and composite numbers, two digit by one digit, two digit by two digit, three by one and four by one multiplication, and how to divide and interpret remainders. It will take us several weeks to complete this unit. One way to support your child through this work is to make sure they are fluent with their basic multiplication facts. From now until the end of the year a great deal of our work will require students to use multiplication. If they are fluent in with their facts, it will allow them to focus on solving the problems that we are working on during this unit.
Our work this week will focus on constructing models that model basic multiplication problems.

We will also work on using the area and perimeter formulas to solve problems. Our work will pick up where the third grade standards for area and perimeter stopped. Students will solve many types of problems. Students will solve problems in each of the situations below:
*Find the area when two dimensions are known.
*Find the perimeter when two dimensions are known.
*Find the perimeter when one dimension and the area are known.
*Find the missing dimension when the perimeter and one dimension is known.

*Facts Practice Week of 9/20

This week in science, we will continue our work in our Matter Unit. We will learn about how matter, specifically water, behaves in each of the three states. Our focus will be on the movement of the molecules and how that movement changes as the state changes. We will also learn about magnets. Students will learn what magnets are and how they work.

This week in math we will then working on module 2. In module 2 we will work on our measurement standards. Students will learn how to convert metric units. Students do not have to memorize conversions. They will be given a reference sheet to use. They can use their reference sheet on all assignments, including classwork, homework, quizzes and tests. We will only convert from larger units to smaller units (5 kilograms = ? grams). Students will also need to be able to decide which units would be the best to measure specific items (What unit would you use to measure the length of a hallway? centimeters, meters or kilometers?). We will also have to solve word problems using measurements (Scarlett ran 500 meters. Drew ran 5 kilometers. What is the total distance Scarlett and Drew ran?).

This week we will begin on Freckle Math homework. Students have until Friday morning to have this work completed. I will try to have the assignments posted on Friday afternoons. If students can choose to complete the work during the weekend. To get to Freckle, please follow the directions below:
*Find Renaissance Learning on the Blended Learning page.
*Once open click Freckle
*Click my name to enter into the math side
*Click on the backpack to view assignments.
Sometimes students will be assigned a specific standard to work on. For those assignments students will earn two grades; one grade for completing the assignment. The second grade will be the score the student earns on the assignment. Students are required to do their work on a sheet of notebook paper. That paper will turned in to me at the end of the week. The two grades will then be averaged together and entered into the grade book. Students are welcome to seek assistance if they need help.
*Fact Practice
*NBT.1.2 Read, Write and Compare Numbers
A sheet of notebook paper is not needed for this week's assignment. Please do not work on the NBT.2.4 activity we are completing that work in class.
This week in science we will continue our work with matter. This week we will learn how to observe properties of matter by using a pan balance. We will also discuss the Law of the Conservation of Matter. This law states that the mass of a whole object is equal to the mass of the same object when broken into pieces.
