I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. This week we will have our first early release of the school year. On this Wednesday 8/28 we will begin dismissal at 1:10. Please make sure your child knows how they are getting home. For bus riders please make sure their will be someone to meet them at the bus stop.
This Thursday is our Open House session. We will begin in the cafeteria at 6:00 for the general session. We will then move upstairs to hear more specifics from Ms. Billiard and myself. We are trying to win an invitation to a special Jaguars Assembly. Only the classes with the highest Open House attendance percentage will get to go the assembly. If you do not have child care students can go to the library for a movie. We are looking forward to seeing everyone on Thursday night.
Students will take individual pictures of Friday. So practice that smile. These are the pictures that will go on our ID tags and in the year book.
Students will not have school on Monday 9/2, due to the Labor Day Holiday. So enjoy your 3 day weekend.

This week in math we will continue to work on place value. We have began learning that a number in one place is 10 times greater than the place to it's right. For example in the number 234,572 the two in the hundred thousands place is one hundred thousand times greater than the 2 in the ones place. In the number 1,231,457 the one in the millions place is one thousand times greater than the one in the thousands place.
Students will have their first quiz on this Thursday. It will cover lessons 1-10. We have covered writing numbers in different forms, comparing numbers, rounding numbers, and the 10 times greater relationship between places will all be on the quiz. Students are allowed to use their journals on the quiz so please make sure to bring them to class.
We will also take our first graded timed quizzes of the year. In 4th grade we take timed quizzes every other week. Students will have two quizzes. One will be multiplication and the other will be division. On each quiz their are 50 randomly selected problems. For the this nine weeks only the multiplication quiz will go into the grade book. All timed quizzes count as a classwork grade except the last one of the quarter. The last one of the quarter counts as a quiz grade. During the 1st nine weeks students will get 3 minutes to answer as many as they can. During the 2nd nine weeks students will get 2 minutes and 30 seconds. And during the 3rd and 4th nine weeks students will get 2 minutes.
This week in science we will continue to learn about the work that scientists do. This week we will continue discussing the scientific method and other skills that scientist need in order to do their jobs. Students will use these skills when we complete our first hands on lab on Thursday.
For this weeks technology homework students need to go to their online science book to complete Lesson 2 What Skills Do Scientist Use. Students also need to watch two videos on Brain Pop Jr., Science Skills and Scientific Method.
We will begin i-Ready for homework next week. As per our district requirement students need to complete at least 45 minutes of i-Ready each week. Students may complete their minutes in whatever way works best for their families. They may break it up into chunks of minutes for a total of 45 minutes or they may choose to sit and do all of their minutes at once. Students have a week to complete their minutes. The week starts on Friday afternoons and runs through the next Friday morning. Students receive a homework grade for math based on the total number of minutes they complete.

Last week we began our work with Mrs. Chin for Genius Hour. Students were given the assignment to think about something science related that they are passionate about or want to learn more about. Students will spend the next several weeks completing research about their passion projects. They will then spend time creating a presentation to teach their classmates about their subject. We will once again be using a Growth Mindset this school year. It had such a wonderful impact on our thinking we decided to continue this wonderful mindfulness outlook.
