Week of April 24, 2023

Happy Monday Everyone,

The weeks are sure flying by!! In less than a month we will be taking our final FAST Test for 4th grade. In a little more than a month we will be wrapping up our time together. We will complete our final math unit this week. We only have one more math standard to cover in class.

As you may or may not know, Mrs. Selby our wonderful office assistant will be retiring at the end of the this school year. She has been a member of our JBE family for 31 years. There will be a drop in retirement reception of Friday May 19th.

We will have our 4th Grade End of the Year Party on Thursday May 25th. The party will take place in the JBE Bus Loop. Times will be announced soon.
For our party we will be having a carnival. The parents for each 4th grade class will be in charge of running two activities. On the day of the party each class will rotate through each activity. Be on the look out for more information from our Room Parents.

This week in math, we will finish up our measurement unit. We will work on word problems on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday and Thursday we will review the unit. And on Friday, students will take their test. After we take the unit 15 test we will spend from 5/1-5/12 reviewing for the final FAST Test. We will also spend time finishing up our year long math game project.

Board Game Day

On Wednesday May 3rd, we will play board games to help us finalize our plans for our individual math games. Students have spent the majority of the year working on their own board games. They have designed their game boards, thought of names, and written questions. We will spend time on May 3rd looking at designs, reading over direction sheets and overall flow of different games.
For this activity we need some board games. If you have any age appropriate board games at your house the we can borrow for the day it would be greatly appreciated. Please use the Sign Up Genius link below so that we can have a list of games. It is okay if some games are duplicated. I just want to a master list so that I can make sure that we have enough games.
For the final copy of the students games, I am planning to give each student a piece of poster board. I am including the link below to a blank game board that I found on Amazon. If you would like to purchase your child a sturdier game board.

Week of April 17, 2023

Happy Monday Everyone,

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. This week I wanted to include information about 5th Grade Leadership clubs. This includes Safety Patrols, TV Production, and ToTs (Teachers of Tomorrow). Students do not have to join a leadership club, however it is highly encourage. Being a part of a club helps students develop their leadership skills and sets them up for future success.

During the week of April 24-28, we will begin the process of selecting students for 5th grade Leadership roles. Students will complete a form in Music about their interests in a 5th grade leadership role. Students will need to have an idea about how they will get to and from school and then rank their interest the following positions: Safety Patrol, ToT-am, Tot-pm, TV production, or no leadership job.

Please keep in mind, students are not guaranteed their first choice in a leadership role. Invitations for leadership roles are distributed in waves so please be patient. There are limited seats for each position.  It is also very important to remember, if your student is invited to a position and they decline in hopes of a different role, there is no guarantee that they will receive an invitation for a second role.

Leadership roles are based upon criteria that were discussed at Open House.

  1. Students rank their choices.
  2. 4th grade teachers provide feedback on students.
  3. Conduct grades (quarters 3+4 in 3rd grade, and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in 4th grade)
  4. Academic grades (A=4pts, B=2 pts, C=1pt each quarter in 3rd and 4th grades
  5. Attendance

Please speak with your child about their classroom supplies. Many students have lost their scissors, run out of glue, and misplaced some of their crayons/colored pencils. We will need these supplies for the rest of the school year.

This week in math, we will begin unit 15. In unit 15 we will work on our measurement standards. Students will learn the appropriate tools to use for measuring different objects. We will also learn how to convert within units. We will learn metric and customary conversions. We will also work on converting units of time. Students do not have to memorize conversion formula's, a reference sheet will be provided to them in class and for tests.

We are participating in the Superintendent's Math Challenge. This contest will happen through Freckle. Each week I will place several Freckle math activities in the students' backpacks. The activities for the math challenge will say Math Challenge at the beginning of the title. Math Challenge activities are optional, however students are highly encouraged to complete them as they will also be used to help us review all of our math standards before our final FAST test in May. Students can earn tickets and other prizes for successfully (70% and above) completing activities each week.
This week in science, we will study the life cycles of Florida plants and animals. We will look at the life cycles of birds, mammals, and reptiles. We will also learn about complete and incomplete metamorphosis. Insects that go through a complete metamorphosis go through four stages; egg, larva, pupa, adult. In complete metamorphosis the larva typically looks nothing like the adult version. Insects that go through an incomplete metamorphosis go through three stages: egg, nymph, adult. Insects that go through an incomplete metamorphosis, molt or shed their outer covering until they reach adulthood. In this life cycle nymphs look like adults they just do not have wings.

We will also begin learning about heredity, animal instincts, and learned behaviors. Heredity is the study of how inherited traits are passed from parent to offspring. We will also cover the basic idea of dominate and recessive genes. Instincts are inherited behaviors that organisms are genetically programmed into the organism. Behaviors like migration in birds, babies crying when they are hungry, and earthworms knowing to burrow into the earth are all examples of instincts. Learned behaviors are those behaviors that organisms have to be taught in order for them to learn how to do them. Jaguar cubs being taught how to hunt by adult jaguars is an example of a learned behavior.
Don't forget that the Moon Calendar project is due this Friday. For this project students need to neatly shade in each circle to match the current phase of the moon. Students can use a gray crayon or their pencil. Since the time of the moon rise varies depending on the phase students can copy our classroom moon calendar or use this website, https://stardate.org/nightsky/moon Make sure to set the calendar to March 2023.
If you would like to earn extra credit for your science grade for the 4th Quarter listen up!! I have a sweet deal for you. To earn extra credit, simply complete your entire moon calendar for all of March and April. Right now, your calendar only has to be done for March 21st - April 20th .  To earn this extra credit your calendar needs to show the moon phases for March 1st - April 30th .
Students may come into the room before or after school and use my calendar or use the calendar on https://stardate.org/nightsky/moon

This week in math, finish our work on unit 14. Last week students learned that angles are parts of circles. And a 1 degree angle is equal to 1/360 of a circle. It takes 360, 1 degree angles to equal a circle. This week we will continue our work with angles. Students will identify different types of angles in two dimensional figures.
We will also learn strategies for finding missing angle measures using given and known information from a diagram
angle x = 35 degrees

angle x = 100 degrees

We are participating in the Superintendent's Math Challenge. This contest will happen through Freckle. Each week I will place several Freckle math activities in the students' backpacks.      This week in math, will begin the second half of unit 14. This week we will describe and draw points, lines, line segments, and rays. Students will learn about perpendicular and parallel lines. We will also learn about the different types of angles. At the end of the week students will begin learning how to use a protractor to draw and measure angles to any degree.
We have both half circle and full circle protractors to use in class. Your child may want to have one to use at home, but it is not required that your child have their own.
The students did an AMAZING job on the Districts PMA 3 last week!! They have worked so hard this school year. Please join me in congratulating them. Students will receive their scores this week and bring home a copy of their individual reports in their math journals. Please sign the report so that I know that you had a chance to see and review your child's scores. Use the information below to help you read and understand the score report.
*Under the word Tests is the score that your child earned on the test.
*The Standard column shows the standards that were assessed on the PMA 3.
*The Description column gives information about the assessed standards.
*PE stands for Points Earned for that standard.
*PP stands for Points Possible for that standard.
*Percent tells the score that the student earned for that standard.
*NC stands for Not Covered. We still have a few standards left to cover before our final FAST testing in May.
For Example:
PE           PP       Percent
1.00        2.00    50.00%
This means that there were 2 questions asked for this standard and the student got one question correct and one question incorrect.
