Happy Monday Everyone,
I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend. This week I wanted to include information about 5th Grade Leadership clubs. This includes Safety Patrols, TV Production, and ToTs (Teachers of Tomorrow). Students do not have to join a leadership club, however it is highly encourage. Being a part of a club helps students develop their leadership skills and sets them up for future success.
During the week of April 24-28, we will begin the process of selecting students for 5th grade Leadership roles. Students will complete a form in Music about their interests in a 5th grade leadership role. Students will need to have an idea about how they will get to and from school and then rank their interest the following positions: Safety Patrol, ToT-am, Tot-pm, TV production, or no leadership job.
Please keep in mind, students are not guaranteed their first choice in a leadership role. Invitations for leadership roles are distributed in waves so please be patient. There are limited seats for each position. It is also very important to remember, if your student is invited to a position and they decline in hopes of a different role, there is no guarantee that they will receive an invitation for a second role.
Leadership roles are based upon criteria that were discussed at Open House.
- Students rank their choices.
- 4th grade teachers provide feedback on students.
- Conduct grades (quarters 3+4 in 3rd grade, and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in 4th grade)
- Academic grades (A=4pts, B=2 pts, C=1pt each quarter in 3rd and 4th grades
- Attendance
Please speak with your child about their classroom supplies. Many students have lost their scissors, run out of glue, and misplaced some of their crayons/colored pencils. We will need these supplies for the rest of the school year.

This week in math, we will begin unit 15. In unit 15 we will work on our measurement standards. Students will learn the appropriate tools to use for measuring different objects. We will also learn how to convert within units. We will learn metric and customary conversions. We will also work on converting units of time. Students do not have to memorize conversion formula's, a reference sheet will be provided to them in class and for tests.
We are participating in the Superintendent's Math Challenge. This contest will happen through Freckle. Each week I will place several Freckle math activities in the students' backpacks. The activities for the math challenge will say Math Challenge at the beginning of the title. Math Challenge activities are optional, however students are highly encouraged to complete them as they will also be used to help us review all of our math standards before our final FAST test in May. Students can earn tickets and other prizes for successfully (70% and above) completing activities each week.
This week in science, we will study the life cycles of Florida plants and animals. We will look at the life cycles of birds, mammals, and reptiles. We will also learn about complete and incomplete metamorphosis. Insects that go through a complete metamorphosis go through four stages; egg, larva, pupa, adult. In complete metamorphosis the larva typically looks nothing like the adult version. Insects that go through an incomplete metamorphosis go through three stages: egg, nymph, adult. Insects that go through an incomplete metamorphosis, molt or shed their outer covering until they reach adulthood. In this life cycle nymphs look like adults they just do not have wings.
We will also begin learning about heredity, animal instincts, and learned behaviors. Heredity is the study of how inherited traits are passed from parent to offspring. We will also cover the basic idea of dominate and recessive genes. Instincts are inherited behaviors that organisms are genetically programmed into the organism. Behaviors like migration in birds, babies crying when they are hungry, and earthworms knowing to burrow into the earth are all examples of instincts. Learned behaviors are those behaviors that organisms have to be taught in order for them to learn how to do them. Jaguar cubs being taught how to hunt by adult jaguars is an example of a learned behavior.
Don't forget that the Moon Calendar project is due this Friday. For this project students need to neatly shade in each circle to match the current phase of the moon. Students can use a gray crayon or their pencil. Since the time of the moon rise varies depending on the phase students can copy our classroom moon calendar or use this website,
https://stardate.org/nightsky/moon Make sure to set the calendar to March 2023.
If you would like to earn extra credit for your science grade for the 4th Quarter listen up!! I have a sweet deal for you. To earn extra credit, simply complete your entire moon calendar for all of March and April. Right now, your calendar only has to be done for March 21st - April 20th . To earn this extra credit your calendar needs to show the moon phases for March 1st - April 30th .
