Week of May 23, 2022

Happy Last Week of School Everyone,

We have finally made it to the last week of school!! This week is always a mix of emotions for me. I am happy that we are getting ready for a well earned vacation, but I am always sad to see the students and families move on to the next grade and teacher. I have enjoyed working with you and your child this year. Watching them grow from the unsure 4th graders at the beginning of the year to the mature, responsible 5th graders that I see now is a wonderful feeling.
I would like to thank everyone for their support during the school year. It makes my job so much easier that you send me wonderful students that are eager and ready to learn. Please know that if I can ever be a resource in the future, please do not hesitate to send me an email.

Our schedule will be pretty light this week. On Tuesday, students will be able to use a our computers to play educational games for the Tech Hour they earned from the Starfish Sprint. Students will also present they Food Chain Rafts that they wrote in class. They will also have time to work on their Dream House Math Project.
On Wednesday, we will have our end of the year party. Our Room Parents have worked very hard to plan a Carnival. All of the 4th Grade classes will rotate thru different stations. At some of the stations students can even win prizes. One of the stations will involve water so students may want to bring a change of clothes. Our party will include lunch from the Mr. Taco food truck. If your child opted to not have a tacos for lunch, please make sure they bring their lunch box. They will also have the option of going through the line in the cafeteria.
On Thursday, students are invited to bring in a game. I would prefer board games so that they students can interact with each other instead of a screen, but electronics are okay. Students are not allowed to connect their devices to the schools network so they need to make sure they bring their game cartridges with them or download the game to their device.
Friday is our last day of school. Students are not receiving report cards on the last day but will get their awards and gifted progress reports. Students will be dismissed at 12:00. So please make sure your child knows how they are going home. There is no extended day on Friday.

If you are looking for activities to help your child prepare for 5th grade, please click on the link below. The link will take you to our JBE Summer Grade Level Activities Page. On the page you will links for ELA, Math and Science activities that will help your child review and prepare for 5th Grade. The PTO will also sponsor a summer reading activity. Students will also be able to access Freckle, Brain Pop, HMH, and Study Island for most of the summer. Students may want to hold on their journals as an aid for completing the summer activities. Their journals can also be helpful aids for next school year.

Have a wonderful summer vacation!! Sleep in, binge watch something great on tv, and have as much fun as you can.

Thanks for a FABULOUS school year,
Aesha Johnson

Happy Next to the Last Week of 4th Grade,

Thank you to everyone that filled out our surveys on information for the last day of 4th Grade. If you have not yet completed the form please contact your child's homeroom teacher for the link. We have to turn in lunch counts for the last day of school this week so please respond as soon as you can. The last day of school is pretty hectic so we are also asking questions about last day of school dismissal.

The only homework this week is for both parents and students. Students will be brining home their data for ELA and Math. At some point, please sit down and have a conference with your child. They will discuss with you how they have done this school year. They should share with you their successes and areas in need of growth. They are also going to be looking ahead at their goals for 5th Grade. After meeting with your child, please complete the feedback form that Mrs. Lomblo and I will be sending out to each of our homerooms.

***Help Wanted***

A parent chairperson volunteer is needed to manage JBE TV Production (a 5th Grade Leadership club).  Did you know all our JBE students have access to a weekly TV program (WJBE News) created and produced by 5th grade students?  Check out a recent episode at the link below.

To ensure this awesome program continues, a parent volunteer is needed to manage TV Production under the oversight of a teacher sponsor.  The program entails assisting the participating 5th Grade students to prepare and execute a weekly news show.  Students research for school announcements, weather, school lunch menu, birthdays, and any other things they want to share – joke, sports, etc., write the script from a template, rehearse, then record.  This year the research/practice is Monday-Thursday, then recordings take place Friday mornings and episode links sent out to all teachers on Monday mornings.  News can be videoed via cell phone, tablet, etc. or in the JBE TV Production green room with A/V equipment (training provided) and put together using any video app (iMovie, Videoshop, etc.).  There is flexibility in how TV Production is executed so the Parent Chairperson has discretion to organize in a manner that best works with their schedule (mornings, after school, weekly episodes or more frequent, news content, etc.).  This is an amazing opportunity to participate in leading a creative, technical, and exciting program that encourages leadership for 5th Grade students and benefits the entire school.  Current Teacher Sponsor is available to answer any questions and provide training/transition support for any volunteer willing to be the JBE TV Production Chairperson.  Please email fojbeptopresident@gmail.com for interest or questions.

Play Day is next Monday 5/23. Students are asked to wear their class shirts, comfortable pants/shorts, and tennis shoes. Students should also plan to bring a water bottle so that they will have water. We will be outside for an hour or more. One of our stations will involve water, so students might want to back extra clothes to change into once we come back to the classroom.

Happy Monday Everyone,

I would like to express my deepest appreciation and thanks for a truly wonderful Teacher Appreciation Week. All of the thoughtful cards, notes and gifts mean so much!!

We will take our Math FSA on this Monday and Tuesday, May 9th and 10th. Please make sure your child gets plenty of rest and eats a filling nutritious breakfast. The Math FSA has two sessions and each session is 80 minutes long. We will take a short stretch break after 40 minutes. We will not have snack until after testing is complete.

Our End of 4th Grade Party will be on Wednesday May 25th. Students will enjoy carnival type activities. Each homeroom parent team is planning two different activities so that the students will rotate between 10 different activities. Some of the activities will include water, so students may want to bring a change of clothes for when we are done.
For lunch that day we have arranged for the Mr. Taco food truck to serve students tacos. Students are selecting between two chicken, two beef, or two vegetable tacos. To fill out their meal they will get chips, salsa and a bottle of water. Students made their food choices in class. The cost of the lunch is $5.00.      This week in math we will take our Math FSA tests. After testing students will begin working on Dream House, our end of year project. The work will be done entirely in class. For this project students will work in groups to design their "Dream House". During this project students will be required to use many of skills that they have learned during this school year. Items that may be of help to the students are mechanical pencils and large erasers.

This week in science we will continue our life science unit. Last week students began working on a Growing Plants Lab. Students were given two marigold seeds to plant. Students were in charge of planting the seeds and deciding how much water to give to the seeds. Students are also keeping a log that includes diagrams and observations about the process of growing a plant from a seed.
As part of our study of the life cycles of animals students are learning about complete and incomplete metamorphosis. We have some special caterpillar visitors that we have been observing for about a week. Butterflies and many other insects complete a complete metamorphosis as part of their life cycle. In a complete metamorphosis, there are 4 stages; egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Some insects like grasshoppers go through an incomplete metamorphosis. Their life cycles include 3 stages; egg, nymph, and adult.

Students will take the District Science Baseline test on this Friday, May 13th. The test will cover all of the material from our science work this school year. We will complete a practice test in class this week. Students can review those items by reading the passages in the pink book that correspond to the questions that they miss on practice test.

This week in math, we will spend time reviewing each of the domains that we have covered in math this school year. We have now officially covered all of our 4th grade math standards and are in our final preparations for our FSA Math Test on May 9th and 10th.
As part of that review students' Freckle homework will look a little different this week. Students have spent time in class reviewing the results of our 3 PMA tests. We looked at each standard that was tested and students made note of the standards that they are still having trouble with based on the results of PMA 3. For homework this week students are to log into Freckle, but instead of clicking on their backpack they will click the practice button. Then click Math. On the next screen they will see the math domains. Please see the list below for the correlations between the standard code and the domains. They should click on the domain that they want to practice. Once in the domain area, scroll to the left to find the lesson that they want to practice. Students need to complete at two lessons of their choosing by Friday. Students have been given a sheet to record the name of the lesson and the final scores they earn.
